Virtues of honesty, hard work, independence, self-sufficiency and even sacrifice for others are rarely being taught or mentioned anymore.
  • Society is spoon fed everything
  • Recognition is valued above most things
  • Little work for large rewards are expected
  • Unable to take constructive criticism
  • Sense of entitlement
  • Seek easy ways out
  • Discouraged easily
What are your thoughts?

Here
It isn't just millennials gen-xers were spoon-fed by the Baby Boomers and have just passed it on. I am a strong believer in mandatory service in the army for every Able Body person After High School. I think it would fix a lot of the self entitled attitude people seem to have today

Most Gen Xers were raised by the Post War Generation, 1928 - 1945. Not the Baby Boomers. Also, Gen Xers constitute one of the lowest population of all generations due to the fact that they were a bridge generation, just like their parents were. So their contribution is extremely limited. Their Date range was one of the shortest of all generations 1965 - 1980. Compared to the Baby Boomers 1946 - 1964. Most Millennials were raised by Baby Boomers, not Gen Xers.
And Gen Xers still learned the concept of work vs reward. They still failed in school when they didn't produce. They didn't get medals just for showing up.

May want to get your Generational date ranges straight.

It's so bad that real estate agents refer to the Master bedroom as the Principle bedroom now so they don't offend anyone.

Today's society rewards failure. It's very destructive in more ways than one.

If you can't make it, not good enough - all you have to do is be loud, complain and wham! All is granted.

You can be lazy, eat anything you want, dress any way you like - you're still beautiful just the way you are some say.

You want to make up your own gender? Go for it. Laws will be changed to accommodate you.

Academically, you no longer have to be good at counting or spelling - as long as your gadget is close by, Google will take care of everything.

Who do you want to be when you grow up, you might ask a kid? Popular answer these days is "I want to be a YouTuber"

I wouldn't call it soft

I think we are just becoming more aware on issues and what is acceptable in society as well as what isn't.

I am a gen Z gal and I do know that in order to make something of myself I will/ should/ am gonna work hard and keep my goal in mind

Sides we are essentially the products of what the previous generation raised etc

As a hypothetical, say there are 2 similar families. One from 1921 and another from 2021. If they were swapped through time, I bet the family from past would quickly adapt, while our generation family would struggle quite a bit.

Honestly? My thoughts are that absolutely nothing has changed since the early post-war years.

What has changed is access to more information via the Internet and social media, and everybody coming on to forums like this and talking about how society is going to hell in a handbag.

People talking more about the things you mention does not mean they're happening more, but we're certainly hearing about them more.

It's sort of like how we are always hearing about how violent crime is "out of control"; despite the fact that statistics show violent crime has significantly decreased in both North America and Europe since the 1970s. But when you have 24-hour news channels documenting as much crime and violence as they can, this is bound to happen.

Are we becoming soft?

Every generation says that about the next.
You are just becoming an old curmudgeon.
Really?
The ultimate example of how much more stupid current generations are than the previous is this.

When the Automobile was first introduced for the masses, the owner's manual included information on how to adjust the Valve timing.
Today, the owner's manual includes a warning to not drink the battery acid.

Nothing has changed since post-war years except access to more information? Interesting take.

I feel like things change and progress at a geometric rate. Things didn't change as fast or as drastically even 20 years ago. Feels like we live in a fast-paced change era now. Technology, advancements, social media changed the game. The world feels smaller now. Every day you wake up to a new version of it.

My nephew lives in a house where kitchen has a faucet with a sensor. He comes over one day, starts waving his hands over my regular faucet, then looks at me and asks: Is it broken??

I showed him an album with photos of his dad and me. Photo was small so he started pinching and opening his fingers over that photo. I nearly pissed my pants when I realized he was trying to zoom in 😆

No one reads instructions and manuals anymore. People go on YouTube to search a video.

Physical books are going out of style, but there's nothing like reading a good book in bed or at a beach. New generation would rather listen to an audio book instead.

Human capabilities reduce with each passing year and we're becoming lazier, more narrow minded. It's sad really.

Definitely. From 1995 (the year mobile phones and Internet access became widespread) onwards things have moved much faster, technologically speaking, totally agree with you on that.

I think it is definitely worth nothing that EVERY generation thinks the current generation below them has it soft and has things too easy.

My parents thought I had it soft as as a teenager/20-something. Their parents, who had lived through WW2 and the Great Depression, thought my parents had it soft. My great-grandparents, six of whom were immigrants, probably thought my grandparents had things too soft.

Give it 20 years and the Millennials will be bitching about how soft and easy the generation below them has it.
