Having had depression for years, the thought has entered my mind, ive even gone so far as to google methods but that feels like a grand Canyon sized leap to finally take action.
I can totally relate. It's a huge leap between suicidal ideation and actual intent. If you ever start to have the genuine feeling/thought of intent go straight to your doctor or the emergency. Some people say to go as soon as you think of suicide but ideation is not necessarily intent.

Yes. As soon as the thought enters your head, I think you should go straight to the hospital.
Have you had suicidal thoughts? If not, it's hard to understand that suicidal thought doesn't mean you have any intent whatsoever to do it. Suicidal thoughts can literally be just background thoughts. You're not distressed or even that depressed sometimes but they can still be there. You could think of suicide everyday for a whole year and never have any intent behind those thoughts.

I haven't really but I lost someone fairly close to me a few months ago. Everyone really tried to get her to return to the hospital but she refused. She had full intent. :(

I'm so sorry for your loss. That is really hard to deal with. People should absolutely go to the hospital if they have intent. Maybe I can explain it this way. For an addict in recovery they maybe have a sponsor. Whenever they think they're going to use they need to get in touch with the sponsor to help them from using. But the addict is going to think about using without intending to use often and they aren't going to contact the sponsor every time the thought of using/the thought of the drug pop's into their head. If they did they would be contacting their sponsor multiple times a day. For people who think of suicide, they would end up going to the hospital many times for an invasive process when they aren't actually intending to kill themselves. They've had the thought but it's a massive gap to close before there is intent of action. They are miles apart.

Here
Anthony was my inspiration for years, he showed me that there was a life after addiction. His shows broadened my horizons and gave me inspiration to live life, travel, cook, and forgive my past. I too suffer with extreme depression and anxiety and thoughts of suicide are a regular occurrence for me. Its funny, you look at someone and think "wow"this guy really has it all together and then he's gone. Im really going to miss this man.

I really liked this guy as a person. I will miss him.R.I.P.
Otherwise I stopped to watch his "Parts unknown" show on CNN. The pictures, the music, the colors , the feelings what comes through the screen make me sad and depressed after a few episodes. I don't know it was his or the director idea, but it can drag you down to the dark. Just my opinion!:(

I remember the first tour of NJ he did for No Reservations. Bourdain was getting in touch with his inner Italian and brought Mario Batali and Michael Lomonaco along for the ride, it was hilarious. They eat at various Italian Delis in the State, so they order a bunch of Italian pasteries and go for a drive. Bourdain is giddy and speaking in the Italo-New York vernacular that's become so common. The car stops, his talking stop, Batali gets out followed by Lomonaco. Batali turns around and says to Lomonaco:

Don't forget the canolis - the end. I will miss him.

As someone who's had is share of mental problems and addiction. If my current inspiration goes off the wagon, I may have to do some serious soul searching.

Abandoned his 11 year old daughter
Yeah, I thought of that.

But being as I've been touched by suicide three times in my life (2 of them were VERY close, and I won't get into details), I've struggled with the why and the blame and guilt.

It's been explained to my bitter self by people a lot smarter than me that people who commit suicide firmly believe that those around them will be better off without them. That may be hard for you to understand. It's hard for me to understand because I can't relate. I have seen first hand, and I mean FIRST HAND the devastation to a family when a member of that family chooses suicide. It's not so simple or black and white. No-one ever thinks it will happen to them, that this sort of thing happens to other people. But sometimes, it happens to you and believe me there are only unresolved questions and guilt.

Well said JTK. ^^^

I can't imagine what it must be like to have thoughts of killing yourself. Must be a horrible thing to live with, especially when it happens to people who appear to have everything going for them. And you're right, it certainly doesn't make any sense, to us anyway.

RIP Anthony Bourdain.

Met him years ago at an event, talk about a guy full of life & zest. Never would have thought.
Almost a year ago lost a childhood friend to suicide, first thoughts were coward & weak. He has two younger kids, talked with his sister after & she told me he struggled with depression for quite some time. Never new & still trying to grasp it. I don't care how bad life is, take away my money & material things & leave me with nothing I could still wake up on a beach somewhere & be happy to smell the fresh air.

He had, as many others who commit suicide, lots of money, fame, and success. He worked for a lifetime and earned it the hard way. All to end like this. When watching his shows I always had the feeling he was a tortured soul.

Never really cared for his show but he seemed like a nice guy and smart.

I have to wonder if there is a correlation between drug abusers and depression. Apparently he had been heavy into drugs earlier in life. I've never in my life thought "gee, I should try cocaine" to lift me up. I've tried weaker drugs and hated them - they obscure my vision of an otherwise beautiful world. Waking up completely sober, enjoying the air and sunlight is literally the best thing in life. It doesn't get any better. Nothing synthetic can improve upon it. So when people become addicts, it seems that something is lacking or run amok. Brain chemistry can be a bitch.

RIP.

By the way, how do we know this was suicide? I have read several articles and none specify how this is known. Just statements which are unsubstantiated. Hope we have not been led down the rabbit hole on this one.

Yes, a lot of people who suffer from depression self medicate to make them feel better. It makes some feel better, other not so much.
