There is going to be liability on the part of Malaysia Airlines when no other foreign carriers were flying over eastern Ukraine do to the danger.

There were other carriers flying over Ukraine, and I just learned to today its fairly routine for them to fly directly over warzones. Commercial airliners fly over Iraq and Afghani airspace every day.

Strange I know, but thats what they said on the news

No one benefits from shooting down a commercial jet. It is clearly a mistake, the only issue being WHOSE mistake. So far, we have the above evidence to work with. And also the assumption that regular army personnel would be better briefed and less trigger-happy than gung-ho merc types.

That is not true at all, it depends on who it can be pinned on. The difficulty here is all parties seem to have the capability to shoot this plane down, but the missile system apparently used requires quite a few operators, it is a 4 vehicle system and requires 20-30 trained people. Is it possible the separatists could have capture a full system, disabled all the security code and trained a full crew to operate it? Also is it possible the Ukrainians would allow the rebels to keep such an easy to find system with large radar signature ? Is it just a coincidence there were no Americans on the Malaysian plane flying that route? Some weird stuff going on here. hmmmm

First and foremost my deepest condolences to all who suffered a loss today.

There seems to have been a air corridor that was authorized for commercial use in the area but today there were storms and frontal systems that seems to have forced the flight path further to the north.

Dutch passenger tweets before flight......irony sucks!

Now reports of black boxes already off to Moscow and area not accessible to non Russian personnel...this is going to be a major kerfuffle..!!

I think one real issue here is WHY THE FUCK were planes flying over a civil war area where planes were being shot down. Malaysian Airlines will take a hammering to its already pathetic reputation for this.

I agree, but its all about money. Taking a detour costs extra in plane fuel and thats where the problem starts.

Me personally I'd rather pay $100 extra for my plane ticket to ensure we bypass any warzones

Man, Russia sure knows how to screw up a good thing. What I mean is that the country is so big, has so many resources, and smart people. It's all just sitting there begging to be turned into an economic power with great cities, yet the government seems to always keep the people down. I'm not saying it's like North Korea or some country in Africa rife with civil wars and archaic education and infrastructure. But Russia does have the assets (resources and brain power), but it seems to go to waste.

Yeah.

Sadly, whomever shot this down has the military firepower to launch missiles, but doesn't have the equipment to tell it's a large civilian aircraft and not a jet fighter or bomber.

I doubt is was "captured". I think that's just "Russian" for President Putin gave it to us along with some advisors to show us how it works and train us.

As for the Ukrainians, a lot of the time they operate on the edge of total incompetence. Their military is about as useless as ours - years of underfunding, corruption and incompetence at all levels. They are crowd-funding for helmets and bullet-proof vests for fuck's sake!

Russians will "study" the black box and announce that it is clearly proven that the Ukes shot down the plane on US orders. Then they will hand it over to the FAA. The FAA will say that the box has been erased / rendered illegible or whatever and accuse Moscow of tampering with it. Putin will say that the box was fine and the USA pressured the FAA to alleging that the box was wrecked.

90% of the people in the West will believe the FAA version.

90% of the people in Russia will believe Putin's version. The other 10% of Russians will STFU to avoid losing their jobs / getting beaten up / getting charged with fake criminal offences.

Life will go on as usual.

A vast tragedy. It's run by a corrupt, inefficient, repressive kleptocracy whose intent is probably to strip the country of hundreds of billions to spend on toys and assets in both Russia and the West. And the ordinary people are so inexperienced in participating in a proper democracy that they do not perceive how they are being manipulated and hoodwinked by their leaders.

It will be interesting to see the Obama administration reaction, seeing how he seems to be the biggest foreign policy wuss in a long time the reaction will be an important one. This is the administration that basically sat back while Russia marched in and annexed part of Ukraine.

The bottom line which may never be able to be determined is was it an older system captured from the Ukrainian base the other week, or a newer Russian only system (which would really only go to it being under Russian command, since I truly believe Russia has the brain power to give the separatists an older system. That is if they are lacking the brain power to avoid giving them one at all).

If these missile systems can get into the wrong hands so easily, it makes you wonder about the nukes.

Here are the tapes. But there's no way to know if they're authentic or not:

Just heard the tape of the phone calls on CNN, if real this is very very damning. WOW
I haven't seen the CNN translation but I had a Russian speaking friend listen to the link oagre gave. He said it sounded very legit because of how worried the speaker sounded (intonation of the voice) He described the conversation as basically 'Shit it was an airline we shot down. WTF are we going to do now?'
