BBC is also stating that they have records of the terrorists in Donetsk claiming that they had captured a BUK. (Query whether they "captured" it from the Uke army or whether Putin "donated" the BUK to them.)

My guess is that the BUK crew had been advised by their CO that ALL civilian flights had been diverted and the only over-fliers would be Uke transports or recce planes. So they had a green light to shoot at anything flying over them. Little did they know Malaysian Air Lines failed to divert its flights from that region through incompetence......

So the Donetsk assholes took what they thought was a safe shot at a guaranteed Uke air force jet and nailed a civilian flight instead.

No one benefits from shooting down a commercial jet. It is clearly a mistake, the only issue being WHOSE mistake. So far, we have the above evidence to work with. And also the assumption that regular army personnel would be better briefed and less trigger-happy than gung-ho merc types.

Note the plane was shot down over Uke air space. So that probably rules out Russian regular armed forces. And Uke armed forces wouldn't be attempting to shoot down Separatist planes. The Donetsk separatists have no planes. It's possible that regular Uke armed forces might have assumed the plane was Russian air force. If so, they are probably instructed to avoid open conflict w Russia at all costs, in case Putin uses it as an excuse to officially invade Ukraine. So Uke reg forces are not likely to shoot at planes - with perhaps the exception of a Russian ground attack aircraft which is actually strafing Uke ground troops or something equally in-your-face.

So balance of probabilities has it as a fumble-ass incompetent from Moscow who signed up to "liberate" Donetsk, who was sipping vodka at the time, was probably half-trained and badly briefed and thought he'd impress the local girls by playing at being a hero and bringing down his own airplane.

I have my doubts that a BUK (SA-17) is as simple to operate as a point and shoot camera. More than likely there had to be, ahem, unmarked advisors either operating it or training the Donetsk farm boys. You don't hand someone a system as complex as a SAM without at least showing them how to run it.

i believe that the US embassy in Kiev has now confirmed the obvious fact that the airplane was shot down.
