LancsLad has me thinking about the Beatles from another thread.

Was anyone else surprised that out of 11 contestants, no one performed a Beatles song on a theme night dedicated to the British Pop Invasion?
They apparently don't have permission to use Beatles songs on the show. At least not those still owned by Michael Jackson.

I think revolver has hit upon the obvious answer, although I read somewhere there had been negotiations going on to allow AI to use Beatles' songs.

A few years ago, Clay Aiken did do "Here There and Everywhere", but that must have been a special case.

Sanjaya may have had the worst performance of a top 12 contestant ever. But he won't be going 2nite, either Phil or even shockingly Stephanie will be headed home.

There was talk before the new season of the show that they would do a Beatles week with McCartney and George Martin as judges, but haven't heard anything since. Could be Paul wanting to keep a low profile after his nasty divorce.

In a recent interview, Simon said that he'll quit the show if Sanjaya wins.

How is that bald guy still around? Despite being a crappy singer, he looks like he`s in chemotherapy.

It was down to Chris and Stephanie, and Stephanie was the odd one out. It should have Chris with the gay voice..the Justin Timberlake "wanna be".

It seems the Howard Stern campaign is working...unfortunately.

I thought the girl who was sent home was one of the better singers. Too bad we have to listen to Sanjaya another week. I think the young girls are to blame for this. Maybe someone should shave his head when he's sleeping.

If anyone other than Melinda wins, it's a farce anyway.

As someone said recently, AI masquerades as a singing contest, but it's really a "who can get votes" contest. Every year there seems to be a person on the show who seems to get much further than they deserve, because they seem to get some strange bloc of voters and that carries them. Last year it was the goofy looking kid, Kevin, the year before it was the fat bastard, Scott, and this year it is the kid with the good hair, Sanjaya.

Stephanie was not the 11th best singer remaining, but she got caught in a voting squeeze between 2+ other black chicks (I'm not quite sure what Jordin is), one girl who's willing to flash a little skin, and a rocker chick who is being kept around for the novelty of it. She simply didn't stand out.

Shocking results. Oh well, the worst will eventually get the heave-ho.

What are the odds that Haley will have a wardrobe malfunction? I'll sit through all kinds of bad singing to see that.

Peter Noone said something to that effect during Tuesday's show, taking an obvious shot at Simon Cowell's repeated claim that it is a singing competition. The camera cut to Simon who was absolutely seething.

Oh yeah, that's who said it. Every year, it does seem that some mediocre or worse singer advances further than anyone expects, and someone pretty good gets whacked early. But it has also been the case that ultimately the "best" do win. I think Sanjaya's fun ends no later than #8.

I totally agree. Based on previous year's shows, the "cute guy" factor (or "cute girl" factor) can get you pretty far, but ultimately, it become obvious that this cute person just isn't as good as the others. Notable examples include Carmen Rasmussen (Season 2), Jasmine Trias (Season 3), Constantine Maroulis (Season 4), and Ace Young and Kellie Pickler from last year.

What also usually seems to be true is that within the final 12, there is an obvious meritocracy, a handful of contestants who will advance far, and everyone else is just filler. It really doesn't matter what order the "filler" contestants go out in. Whether someone like Stephanie or Sanjaya go out 12th or 6th is almost irrelevant. They're not gonna win.

Yup, and imho, if anyone except Melinda Doolittle wins this season, then it clearly isn't about singing.
Again, I don't disagree, but when it gets down to the final choices, things like likeability and versatility come into play. Was Carrie Underwood really that much of a better singer than Bo Bice? Hard to compare, apples and oranges really, but Carrie was the sweet blonde country girl, so she won. Was Taylor Hicks really a better singer than Katharine McPhee? I'd say, on technical merit, Katharine was clearly a better singer. But she was a bit limited in her song choices, and kind of boring personally. Taylor was far more entertaining, and he won.

IMO, Simon has it right but also has it a little bit wrong. But even in the sense that he is wrong, I think he gets what this show is all about. It is a "singing competition", but ultimately, they're trying to sell a ton o' records here. Ideally, the winner of AI should not only be a good singer, but they should have commercial appeal as well. If Sanjaya's appeal to little girls enabled him to sell a zillion records, well, yeah, that would make the singing competition part of the show a travesty, but it wouldn't be a bad thing for the people who run the show. It would still make Simon a ton o' money.

Taylor wasn't the best singer last year. He wasn't the 2nd best, 3rd best, 4th best or 5th best either. All of Katharine, Elliott, Chris, Paris, Mandisa and Gedeon and probably a few others I've forgotten were better than him. I guess he wasn't 6th best either.

I agree, I doubt they're making a ton of dough from Taylor Hicks album sales.

Of course, I saw an interview with Simon the other day and it stated before the interview that he is paid over $30 million a season to be on AI and another $38 million + for a similar show in the UK. I can't imagine that he really cares too much about how well Taylor is doing at this point.
And aside from that he's a record producer for Sony BMG and cuts a cut from all record sales from artists they've signed through any of the Idol franchises worldwide. No I guess Simon isn't too worried.

Yes but the difference was Kevin Covais and Scott Savol could sing pretty well. Sanjaya can't. And that cover of the Kinks I felt embarassed for the kid. It was downright awful.

Oh brother, that's all we need--a discussion about who of those three sucks more. I think everyone who is on the show at this point can sing to some degree--but it's all relative. Maybe Kevin or Scott do sing better than Sanjaya, but the point is, they all did not sing better than some people who were eliminated before them.
