If the Liberals and NDP really want to save the taxpayer some money they can always decline to run a candidate against him. That would be a responsible thing to do, given their tiny chances of winning the riding. I won't hold my breath to see if they are capable of such decisions.

Ironically, you take some effort to help me make my point. It says a lot that a nobody bank-bencher-to-be, as opposed to a star Liberal candidate, could win such a riding over an incumbent of many years with broad national appeal and power within parliament. Redistricting must have made it pretty easy for Fanjoy! I can only imagine who lives in that annex to the Carleton riding - civil servants, CBC employees, recent arrivals to Canada, federal consultants and contractors?

As to your link, I've seen all these arguments. They aren't persuasive, or in many cases even on point. The riding changes were made by committees? Who was on the committees? Who appointed them? Riding changes could benefit the Conservatives overall across Canada? What has that got to do with the specific effect of changes to Carleton? They made an analysis transposing 2021 results to say Poilievre still had a fighting chance. Too bad they made the changes 2 years later and that the demographics of the annexed area were rapidly changing! Typical intellectually lazy media reporting. The plain truth is that Poilievre did not suddenly become unpopular with the voters in his former riding. He was unpopular in the annex to the riding - an analysis the article fails to undertake.
So the issue is that Elections Canada needed to take special care to give PP a super soft riding, tailor made to make sure only conservative voters were there? Why doe PP deserve special treatment that no other candidate got? Is he that soft? The truth is he cooked himself when he supported the Convoy. The people of Ottawa didn't forget.
A guy who claims to be about fiscal responsibility lost an election fairly, and by a large margin. He then made a backroom deal with another fairly-elected party member to have him step down and hand over his seat, forcing a new election. Telling the voters of Battle River Crow Foot that their vote, their representation is less important than PP's ambition.
The ELECTION that PP is forcing is what will cost money, not that other people are going to run in it.

Riding redistribution happens regularly across Canada through independent, non-partisan commissions. It’s not a Liberal plot, it’s a process meant to reflect population changes and ensure fair representation. If a "nobody unknown Liberal" can win in a new riding, maybe that says more about shifting voter sentiment than about any grand conspiracy.
As for Poilievre, yes, he’ll return to the House, but holding the Carney government to account will require more than rehearsed soundbites and social media clips. And Fanjoy? He’s the elected MP now, chosen by the people of that riding, not imposed, not planted. Dismissing him out of hand before he’s even begun his work says more about your bias than his capabilities.

The conservative voters of Battle River Crow Foot, like in every conservative seat not held by a potential cabinet minister, voted for the policies of the Conservative Party. They will be more than satisfied to have as their MP the Conservative Leader. Politics is a tough business, but there is no question that Poilievre is a more valuable asset to this party and Conservative voters than Damien Kurek. Kurek is certainly not worthless, and will no doubt be back on a ballot in the next election.
Elections CAN be held cheaply and quickly when there a fewer candidates on the ballot. There can even be an election by acclamation if no one were to run against Poilievre.
You must be awake to the fact that Poilievre's campaign, unlike Singh or countless other leaders who lost their own riding, was a limited success, and that another Federal Election within 18 months is more likely than not. You should understand these circumstances to be the exception, not the rule.
I think most of the crying about this this does not come from Conservative voters, but rather from supporters of other parties who fear Poilievre as their political opponent in the next election.
