Yes I had a Sheena Easton poster on my wall as a teen. Big crush on her growing up. Here she is killing this live performance of "The Lover in Me" on Arsenio Hall. Song was written and produced by the team of L.A. Reid and Babyface.

This jam always gets me moving. The drum machine hits hard and then the keys, oh the keys. A sped up sample from Parliament.

Brothers Johnson hit #1 on the R&B charts with 3 songs - "I'll Be Good to You", "Strawberry Letter 23" & "Stomp!". For some strange reason this track below didn't have the same success, it only reached #45. Perhaps because there weren't a lot of vocals. But damn the instrumentals are exquisite.

Early Uptown Records. Father MC "I'll Do 4 You" (1990). A young Mary J. Blige with the background vocals. A couple years before her debut solo album.

The Queen of Hip Hop Soul Mary J. Blige turned 52 yesterday. Damn I feel old I'll be turning 50 in a few months. 😰
I don't think I've posted this one before. Of course an interpolation of The Stylistics "You Are Everything". From the Share My World album (1997)

She's somewhat of a throwback to the older soul singers. Great voice and wrote most of her own lyrics. One of my favorites no doubt.

Skyy was a funk/post disco band, mostly prominent in the early 80's. They scored a #1 R&B hit with Call Me in 1981 and had moderate success with jams like 'Here's To You', 'Let's Celebrate' and this nifty tune from 1980 called 'High'

Its been sampled quite extensively in hip hop over the years. This one is definitely a favorite, Too $hort's 'Short But Funky'

SWV = Sisters With Voices. Successful R&B girl group from the 1990's. Love this tune from 1996, first successful production from the Neptunes.

I may have posted this one in the past. A nice mid tempo jam. It was covered by several artists, most notably by Kashif & Mel'isa Morgan.
Original by Mother's Finest (1978)

Best cover (1987)

Styles P was 1/3 of the group The L.O.X. along with Jadakiss and Sheek Louch. He dropped a few solo albums but A Gangster and a Gentleman (2005) was the best. Love this joint

Same sample of the Kool & the Gang as A Tribe Called Quest's 'Scenario (remix)' which is one of the best posse cuts ever.
