The United States had the highest incarceration rate of citizens in the world. It's also the most violent nation in the western world.

Stricter jail terms may make you feel better, but it does nothing to prevent violence.

While I agree in part it's not entirely true. If a person is locked up he obviously can't commit a crime so it does prevent crime . If you look at who commits the crime in Canada I think you will find that a small percentage commit the majority of crime they are repeat offenders so longer jail times will mean they won't be out on the street re offending. The U.s IS MORE VIOLENT THAN cANADA period but I am not sure it has anything to do with the fact that they incarcerate more people. The U.S. has more slums and ghetoos than Canada but we are getting there.

These shootings are so rampant and rare . The only reason why it got so much coverage is because it happened on Boxing Day and the victim was a "pretty young blonde" . Give it a few months or weeks and people will forget all about it until the next shooting .

It was a news event because of where it happened (Yonge and Dundas). And when it happened (Boxing Day). The time it happened (midday). The number of innocents hurt (6). The number of innocents killed (1). That is why this became not only a local event but was splashed around the world. Anyhow I think its time to re hi-jack this thread.

There was no coverage on him because in the media’s eye he wasn’t a “innocent victim” (and therefore not as much sympathy is given). There was talk of his murder being linked to gangs and drugs.

But there has been innocent black victims (not involved in drugs or gangs) that have been either injured or killed in recent shootings, that have not received as much media attention.

In any case the whole situation in Toronto is very sad.

Actually I had to do some research on this latest victim , since there was hardly any news on him . The Toronto Sun stated he was an innocent victim just waiting for his gf outside her apt , he was recently laid off but is working part time and attends church regularly and there was some scuffle about a CD at the time of the incident .

Jackson could well be racist. I dont give a rats ass. The great Malcolm X used to be a racist so why cant Jesse be? Those men grew up in times when they saw their father's murdered because of their skin colour and then have the justice system laugh at them and spit in their faces as they buried their loved ones. If black people are watching the news and hear that a shooting takes place. Are they racist to be happy when they discover black people arent involved?

There is nothing wrong with saying "a black man killed this or that person". When you go on to say silliness such as black people, or Caribbean people as you stated, love to shoot and kill people then it makes you not only sound stupid but yes...racist!

Black refers to skin colour. Blacks just like whites, or asians or South Americans are not one homegenous group. Most of the people committing crimes come from societies that have a violent drug and gang culture.

Its quite obvious that Franky is suffering from MSG overload. I think this problem comes with the territory of being an Asian Food guide critic. I would have thought that a knowledgeable Asian food guide critic would be able to stay away from dining establishments that continue to put massive doses of MSG on their offerings.

The black man shot WAS NOT a criminal but somebody delivering a CD to his SO.

The black woman who was shot on her first night out as a widow did not recieve much coverage. Racism? I don't know, but the fact is she didn't get much coverage.
