Despite my handle, I am not black. I have been to the festival once, but will not return because I hate being in large crowds, and I think the events on Toronto Island are overpriced for the cover charge organizers want.
I too do not attend large crowd event. Leaving the event is always a damn pain in ...................I used to live in London, UK and boy was that tough when trying to leave a very crowded event and getting the undergroud tube or a bus out of 'dodge'

BTW, are you Jamaican?

Nope...not from JA.

My roomate in college was 1st generation Jamaican. It was from him I gained an appreciation of the culture, and a love of the music and food & drink(much to my waistline's dismay).

I try to visit there at least twice a year.

What about the other shootings. How about the one at yonge and dundas in front of the cops? I guess if a stray bullet hit an innocent person that would be OK since it is only one shooting. My point is, is that things like this should not be happening. It is a festival to celebrate the carribian culture, a time for fun, then this shit happens. It maybe only one shooting but it's one too many in my books.
Now you're being stupid. Of course even one shooting shouldn't happen. My complaint was that your post implied that all 3 shootings were related to Caribana - and that if it weren't for Caribana those 3 men would still be alive. Two men died apparently in seperate incidencts which had nothing to do with Caribana.

Sounds like my ex wife from Sweden who I met at a reggae club in London, England. There were times I felt she knew more about Jamaica than I did and that was kinda shameful. lol It was funny to see how she 'reacted' to the spicy food.
:D

She could understand patois perfectly but would never speak (I prefer it that way lol). Do you understand it perfectly? When you go to Jamaica dont tell me you stay at Hedonism II
lol

Dundas Square shooter resides in Mississauga.

see....i knew there was a reason why i moved to Mississauga:cool:
Well Blackheart, the shooter at Dundas Square namely Ajine Stewart 24, charged with first degree murder, is a resident of Mississauga (Toronto Star, Monday, August 1, Pg A8).
I'll bet most of the violent crimes that occur in downtown Toronto (Entertainment district, etc) are committed by these shitheads from the suburbs.
It's nice and quiet in Mississauga because you shit disturbers from the suburbs come downtown to settle your scores and are the ones giving the downtown area a bad name.

Every Caribana, you hear people "bustin' shots" into the air. Sometimes people get hurt. This happens at night on the streets, and even in nightclubs. Fact is, is this shit happens EVERY FRIGGIN YEAR. No wonder the city is talking about cancelling Caribana Festival in the years to come. The murders, gunshots,....Its giving Toronto a bad name. Caribana is to celebrate comming together, culture, food, music, harmony. Not murder.

It's funny...when I first get there...because I haven't heard it for a bit...I can only get about 40% of it,but about the fourth day of a 7 day stay..maybe 70%...

No Hedonism for me..I'm a grow-er..not a show-er...my first two times were at the Riu Tropical Bay(it was quite reasonable, but not very Jamaican themed), but we probably spent 4 1/2 days off the resort...next time...maybe Negril Beach Club Condos, or Negril Garden...or may splurge and go to Sunset by the the Palms.

What??? Continue to wallow. What part of Caribana do you see celebrating murder? Do you people think before you post? Is it only intelligent people who are able to separate the festival itself from a few bad seeds out of the MILLIONS in attendance who come to the festivities to act out their nonsense. Lemme tell you this. If whoever some of those thugs were looking for took their kids to the Santa Claus day parade the same thing would happen. It is NOT about the festival and what it represents. It is about people who are opportunists!

Are all white people a bunch of racists based on what on what has happened in the past and continues to happen in the present?.......such as the brutal beating of a black kid walking through a neighbourhood in NY a few weeks ago and only days ago the axe murder of a black teenager by a gang of white youths just because he was dating a white girl. All this after countless Howard Beach and Bensonhurst incidents(murders) not to mention the Stephen Lawrence fiasco. Is that what you are telling me? Oh boy, I wont be dating any more white girls. I dont want a bunch of white youths trying to kill me because I took one of their 'prized' possessions!

So I guess black guys should be careful about dating white women or walking through white neighbourhoods. Are those perps giving the white man a bad name? Give me a break.

aah, so the north coast is where its at for you eh. When growing up I rarely left Kingston and when i did it was to go to Newcastle, the Blue Mountains and places of 'nature'. I knew alot of guys who go to the tourist areas to 'pick up' ladies though :) I was supposed to meet this lady at Hedosim once back in about 2000. She flew in from LA but I chickened out. I dont know how people manage to do those things. Hedonism is definitely not a Jamaican thing if you know what I mean. lol

Glad you enjoyed your stay. Some do, some dont.

..

the best thing about this thread is that more than half of the people are not thinking rationally or logically and are being hypocrits to some extent.

The point is everything happens for a reason and life is all relative.

Now as posted in an article from the National Post, 27% of crimes are committed by Blacks and they are 8% of the population. Now Indians(excluding tamils since they are sri lankan) are 15-20% or Toronto/GTA's population and less than 3% of crimes are committed by them. Percentages talk. I am stating this second ratio to counter the argument that this is a common war of minority vs majority which is obviously not the case.

I have no problems with blacks but I have a problem with Thug culture, hiphop is good, but some make the whole scene into a everyday life style even if they live in a double income household.

Now having many tamil friends and understanding the culture, they're are a great percentage of tamils in scarborough, and they do commit many crimes (99% violent crimes among each other, not robbery etc) and in 41/42 division they even have a whole dept called the "tamil task force" where a few officers are dedicated in investigating tamil youth etc. Now not even once in a few years has one tamil complained about this program, not even the youths and the parents are extremely happy that this was formed since they are concerned for future tamil youths in Toronto. Now aren't blacks happy that they are watched over more? don't they want to see an improving ratio of population-to-crime? I would think so? The point is even if the police spot check blacks more than other cultures because of the 1/3% of the cities crime, there is no need to worry since we live in a lawful society and if they didn't do anything illegal they wont be charged with possesion of drugs or a gun. Only if they did do something illegal then they should worry.

And for the argument that large crowds cause higher crime, I am not even going to start, there are way too many obvious counters to that argument.

Also just a question? When Toronto provide public funding programs at high-crime areas like regent park and create 'public' youth programs that offer basketball camps, local hiphop artist speeches why don't people complain then? There is a reason it is basketball and not golf or street hockey, there is a reason it is hiphop start speeches rather than Rockstar or country speeces, I am in no way talking about blacks but am talking about the thug culture caused by hiphop which is closely related. These campls are a very good idea and help the entire community, but no one complains about them? arent' they targetting someone?

the point trying to be made here is simple, People only like to complain about something when it is of a negative nature. Don't be biased. If you have a simple ethnic targetting complain, then complain about it whether it is beneficial to your community or derogatory to your community.

And me personally, many people like to cause fights at caribana, but I go anyways because if you don't look for trouble or try to avoid it , you can have a good time.

Sorry for making it long guys, i usually don't even like posting too much, but it looks like everyone is writing so just wanted to give my 2 cents

Superman,

tell us what gave this hip hop thug culture life while you are it. Did you know that the movie Scarface and the like are as much to blame as hip hop since it was movies like that influenced certain gangsta rappers?

And when you speak of crimes what type of crimes are you speaking of? On that you need to be specific.

Also, do you honestly believe that of the majority of the 8% of the population black represents commits all these crimes? How do we know for sure it is a minority. It is so easy for certain people to analyse black people based on 'statistics' and nothing more. Everyone has problems and some have more than others. I just dont remember any other race being denigrated and inhumanely treated by their 'masters' and then taught by those very masters how to behave and 'act'

What percentage of racial hatred crimes are committed by blacks anyway?

How do you know Tamils dont complain about profiling? Even if they dont so what? Were they slaves? How much suffering did their ancestors go through in North America compared to that of black people? I know Indians were indentured slaves but blacks where the REAL slaves. Do you know about the slave rebellions in Haiti and Jamaica? Why did the Haitians and Jamaicans revolt against slavery while the rest of the Caribbeans accept it and didnt fight? Some people fight the system and status quo and some dont.

I know you will say slavery is way in the past but what happens in the past shaped the future/present. I dont think many people understand what slavery was all about. It would take eons for me to explain it and the effects it has to this very day. This cycle will continue when you have black people in denial as well as bigots who are intolerant like many on this board. I see all the supporters of Caribana saying yes, they dont like the one or two shootings that take place and it bothers them. However, on the other hand you have the bigots on here wanting the event scrapped. Why? They dont want other people to have their day in the sun. If a pigeon so much as fell out the sky or someone suffered heat stroke they would want Caribana cancelled. THAT is the main problem. All this nonsense about the crime black people commit and the % that is committed by blacks is tata and a waste of time when discussing Caribana. The festival is but one day. The black community has to live a cycle of violence for more than that so forgive me if I dont see the point of all this garbage.

One day in the sun for Caribbean people's culture and all this talk about black people emerges. Nice. It just goes to show the level of thinking that is ever present.

I see alot of great things blacks have done for this country(considering they make up 8%) without any credit given to them. Dont you love it how someone goes from being a Canadian to a Jamaican-born Canadian when they have been found to do something wrong. It is something that happens countless times. In fact one of the very richest men in Canada actually is a Jamaican who came here for university(McMaster). I speak of the billionaire Michael Lee-Chin. The shoe-bomber was British-born to a Jamaican man and a white brit female I believe but he was all of a sudden jamaican but not Colin Powell who has two Jamaican parents from the parish of St Elizabeth?? Am I missing something here???

There are many more success stories like mr Lee-Chin but those are not important. When they do good they are Canadian and colourless. When they do bad they have a colour and they have 'another' nationality. I dont understand why this is the case but it is life and who has time to cry over it. Not me. I will mention it but I wont lose sleep over it.

I can tell you of the 5 times I have been stopped by Peel cops and have them mock my accent and laugh at me or call me a monkey or refer to me as you people and how they want to search every inch of me and my vehicle because I wear my Jamaican coloured sweater with pride. nevermind the fact I dont have a record and I have more education in my little toe than they have in their entire being.

You know what, let me stop ranting.......because I dont want anyone to think I am lending an excuse to what happens within the black community. I am merely offering a different perspective that seems to be lost on some people. Everyone likes to point the finger and say shame on you. The truth is, this is a two way street.

Peter Tosh once sang "I dont want peace, I need equal rights and justice"

Let me add, I need and want to see 'tolerance'

The way I look at it.... There is no point even waisting any more of our energy on theses people. They obviously want to see things in a racial way and nothing is going to change that. Like someone had mentioned... Its embedded in their heads since birth, and unless you have the time and money to convert 1 person, its not even worth it!
We are here trying to talk about a beautiful time of year festival, and they bring up killing, shooting, now its turning to racism.
Its sad to see such an open country like this turn to shit because of people like that.
Only in Canada and the United States will you see a colored person getting beat by cops for no reason, or will you see a colored person getting pulled over for a regular 'road check'
This country is getting sicker and sicker the more I think about it!
And whats even more scary is some of theses people here probably have kids or will have kids and teach them the same mentality!
At least with the KKK they have their uniforms and you can identify them by seeing them! the others are just silent about it until they see colored united. Thoses are the scary ones because they walk among us everyday and act like all is fine.
Some of you just make me sick!
