Thanks for your research but I was thinking of the salary cap era.
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/NHL_salary_cap

If we go back to expansion, then we have the great Canadien, Islander and Oilers dynasties that won multiple Cups.
You did use the term "modern day". I'd say the dynasties of Islanders and Oilers were in modern times.

So you are talking about a record number of cups for a player in only the last 15 years. Seems like a pretty small sample size.

"Williams has won the Stanley Cup three times, in 2006 with the Hurricanes, and in 2012 and 2014 with the Kings. He has played nine Game 7 playoff games in his NHL career, with his team sporting a 8-1 record in these games. He currently is tied for most goals in these games with Glenn Anderson at seven, and has the outright record for most Game 7 points with 15, which has earned him the nickname "Mr. Game 7".[1] He has also won the Conn Smythe Trophy as playoff Most Valuable Player in 2014 with the Kings."

Yes, 3 Cups (maybe a 4th) in 15 years. Amazing!

Even in a (mostly) 6 team league Beliveau winning 10 cups in 16 years and Cournoyer 10 cups in 15 years seems more amazing to me.

Why is 3 cups so amazing? How many players on the Hawks and Pens also have 3 Cups.

Is Nylander still MIA? Someone should tell him it's safe to come out now.

Carolina ("Sweet Caroline") will have their hands full with Boston.
They already beat Washingtion. Defending Stannley cup champs. A team just as big and heavy if not more so than Boston. Do you not know hockey?

The Islanders are also considered a big heavy team

Those Montreal teams were amazing. Many Canadiens have won multiple rings. I think the Pocket Rocket also has 10 or more. Doubt any players now will win 10 Cups (not even Mathews).

you do know it's a 31 soon to be 32 team league vs a 6 team league right? I like how you isolated Matthews like he's god.

He had 11. That is the record.
Doubt anybody in the future will come close to 11 and all with the same team. I think even great players like Orr, Hull, and Clarke have only one or two Cups. I think Jean Beliveau sold his rings at auction to raise money for his daughter.

Anyway, back to Justin Williams. A possible 4th ring? Time will soon tell.

Obviously you don't realize it is no longer a 6 team league if you have doubts. Why even state something so ludicrous. Winning a cup now is like winning 5 cups in a 6 team league so winning 2 and there is your 10.

So, Justin Williams has won 15 Cups so far, with the possibility of 20. That is even more amazing than 3 or 4 Cups. Why are you so smart?

Not necessarily so. That "math" presumes all tams have an equal chance of winning each year which is only true in theory.

It was easier for the CANADIENS to stack a bunch of Stanley Cups in the 6-team NHL. Not so much for other teams. Although mathematically they had a much greater chance, in reality the Championship in 40's 50's & 60's was largely dominated by 2 teams in each decade, except for a couple of one-offs (NYR 1940 & Chicago 1961) it was usually between Montreal and one other team. There was no free agency, very little path for a player to get out of a franchise that was spinning it's wheels.

In he last 20 years quite a few franchises were able to manage 3 Stanley cups in the space of 10 years, including both the Hawks & Penguins over just the past 10 years, so it is still quite possible for a fortunate player to retire with more Stanley Cup ring than Bobby Hull.

While it's highly unlikely anyone will ever get 10 again, 4 or 5 is quit possible given the way players can move and in some cases cherry pick their teams to get on contenders.

You are using a small sample size of 1 year so of course. Use a larger size of say 100 years and certainly all 31 or so teams would have a more equitable chance of winning.

There have only been 31 teams since 2017 to equitably compete. The first 50 of those 100 years only had 6 teams.

Trying to stay in a Happy Place
2nd Round Picks
Dallas vs St. Louis - Blues in 7 (Binnington continues to channel his inner Ken Dryden/Patrick Roy like rookie season playoff performance - both won the Cup in their rookie year)
Colorado vs San Jose - Sharks in 7 (assuming Pavelski is back by Game 2)
Columbus vs Boston - Blue Jackets in 6 (Panarin and Bobrovsky try to maximize free agent value with inspired playoff performances)
Carolina vs NYI - Islanders in 6 (bunch of jerks run out of steam - if it goes to Game 7 I switch my prediction to Carolina due to Justin Williams)

See if I can improve on my 1 out of 8 success rate in 1st round
Okay - so I went from 1 out of 8 to 2 out of 4 - so getting better - next round picks below

3rd Round Picks

Carolina vs Boston - as much as it pains me to say this I am going with Boston in 7
St. Louis vs San Jose - Martin Jones continues to be hot - but so does Binnington - but SJ deeper talent wise overall so SJ in 7

I concur with both selections but going to say that Boston-Carolina ends in 6 games. Good run for the Hurricanes they are going to be a team to watch.

Well at least I am willing to make predictions - for a guy who has some pretty strong opinions and is a self professed hockey expert you have not made any in this thread - except for one post where you said Tampa may come back to beat Columbus!

So far I'm 3 for 4.

I picked Sharks, Blues and Bruins. Only got Carolina wrong.

Round 3 picks.

Sharks vs Blues***Sharks in 7
Jerks vs Jerks***Jerks in Black and Gold Jerseys in 5.

Since it's raining all day to-day (and Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday, Friday and the rest of the month), I'll be watching the Bruins in Game 2 (the refs really screwed up Game 1) on TV. Will also be watching the Raptors (does Leonard ever smile?) in their Game 7.

It'll really be nice if the Carolina "Jerks" and the Raptors win.
