The market IS deciding the wages. The collective negotiations are part of the capitalist economy and have been for centuries. Ever heard of guilds in Europe or the Hansiatic League? This is not leftism or socialism, it's just pooling resources to achieve leverage. It's pure capitalism.
So you're ok if we bring in a bunch of mexicans that will do your job for $15/hr?

But we won't, because the union will not agree and the City of Toronto is the union shop, too.

No it isn't. There are many axioms to disprove this but minimum wage, unemployment checks, tax brackets are just a few examples to disprove that the labour market is organic.
Sure it is, in my patch.

You damn socialist. So lets get rid of the union. We've done it for almost everything else.
By your broad definition you can call anyone a socialist. 😆 Just a reminder- socialism means the workers control the tools of production.

Canada needs workers whether or not they have money.
Definitely need a lot of immigrants...the problem is some of these immigrants coming in have knowledge how to play the system...

🤣 You're not answering the question.

Why can't we just get the same skilled labour for less somewhere else?
Because it's bad for the country, bad for the workers.

Sounds more like it's just bad for you, to be honest. Nothing changes for me in this scenario. Actually, you are probably costing me more in taxes.

But that's ok, since we are both Socialist in the same struggle, I understand your right to a fair wage and know the importance of nut being undercut.

It's bad for the country because depressing wages = lower tax base and labor disruptions not to mention higher poverty rates and the plethora of social problems that come with that. And OBVIOUSLY it's bad for the workers.

You are mixing up socialist measures with socialism.

Free healthcare or bailing out a bank are socialist measures. Just like unions are.

Without unions workers would be treated like damn slaves. Just like the worker in Quatar who built all the stadiums for the world cup. The average salary of quatary prople is a million dollar per year. Yet they slaved all construction staff.

If a single monkey would hoard all the bananas the other monkey’s would slaughter him.

That’s why we need a balance in life with good socialist measures in a free capitalist market.

I don't consider healthcare socialism anymore than road(or gate tax in the old times) tax as being socialism. We need infrastructure like roads, sewers, water for the society to function properly. Tax financed healthcare is just an extension of that trend, and a necessary extension.

You do know there is a much more logical and simpler solution rather than peddling for even more taxes, which in turn drives up the cost of everything at a compounded rate.

This country is one of the most resource rich on earth. Specifically when it comes to natural gas and hydro electricity. BS politics constantly suffocates expansion and growth while we are, most cases, forced to import. This country's money problems would evaporate.

How do you think Scandinavian countries operate ?

We have a different system of government. It would be a nice solution, but....too many obstacles on the way to reach it.

It's not "free" that's for sure. But, Americans framed the question of healthcare along the ideological lines and that's what makes it so difficult. Too much politics from ALL sides.

That's why I wish we have more wealthy immigrants who bring
with them the money to hire people to do those jobs that suck.

Imagine we will accept 200k multi-millionaire migrants each
of whom are to spend $100k yearly on chauffeurs, house maids
and escorts. Wouldn't it be great locals unqualified for good jobs
can still find employment on not-so-good but well-paid jobs?
Those people wont immigrate. For example someone who is a multi-millionaire in India/China/Phillipines etc has no incentive to come to Canada. Money buys more over there than it does here in Canada.

In other words, we get the people that don't have any money.

Today while in Brampton at ServiceOntario, I was shocked at the high percentage of men lining up. (No I don't live in Brampton!!) They appeared to be immigrants. Their thick accents were the telltale sign. (So don't attack me for racial profiling! You don't learn accents in our elementary school system.)

The place was packed and the line-up went out the door. If only men are going to come here, SP prices will continue to inflate. And sadly, these men were some of the ugliest and poorly dressed specimens I have seen. SP's must be loving immigration!

How did you assume that all these men will be lining up to book SPs? White men are the majority demographic booking SPs. Many of these people have families and know the value of money, which they will most likely not waste on SPs.

Those people also immigrate because they are qualified, have education, and are likely to earn more than most Canadians.

The purpose of Canadian immigration is to allow young (and therefore poor, and also because we need the average age to come down), educated immigrants who are likely to get jobs, succeed and make a life here.

Also regarding their dressing sense etc., they will eventually learn to integrate.
