Trudeau Bends The Knee: Canada Will Send 10,000 Troops To Border, Name Fentanyl Czar To Delay Trump Tariffs

MONDAY, FEB 03, 2025 - 04:53 PM
Update (4:40pm ET): In what is a carbon copy of Trump's tariff-delaying deal with Mexico, moments ago Canada's outgoing PM, Justin Trudeau, said that he too had bent the knee, i.e. had a "good call" with Trump, and that US tariffs on Canada would be paused for 30 days after Canada - just like Mexico - agreed to send 10,000 troops to the border as part of a $1.3 billion border plan which "reinforces the border with new choppers, technology and personnel, enhanced coordination with our American partners, and increased resources to stop the flow of fentanyl".

Trudeau also said that Canada will appoint a Fentanyl Czar, list cartels as terrorists, ensure 24/7 eyes on the border, and launch a Canada- U.S. Joint Strike Force to combat organized crime, fentanyl and money laundering.

Finally, the Canadian PM also signed a new intelligence directive on organized crime and fentanyl and we will be backing it with $200 million.

As a result of not only bending the knee but bending over fully for the US president, Trump's proposed tariffs will be paused for at least 30 days.

Shortly after Trudeau's post, Trump followed suit on his own Truth Social network, writing that Canada "has agreed to ensure we have a secure Northern Border, and to finally end the deadly scourge of drugs like Fentanyl that have been pouring into our Country, killing hundreds of thousands of Americans, while destroying their families and communities all across our Country."

Trump concluded by saying that he is "very pleased with this initial outcome" adding that the Tariffs announced on Saturday will be paused for a 30 day period "to see whether or not a final Economic deal with Canada can be structured. FAIRNESS FOR ALL!"

Separately, the FT reported that all shipments arriving by mail from Canada and China will need to be cleared by customs from Tuesday onwards as the US moved to close a trade loophole that allowed low value imports to avoid duties.

“Without regard to their value, no mail shipments from China will be cleared or released” by the Customs and Border Protection agency “unless and until formal entry is properly filed”, the agency said in a document scheduled to be published in the Federal Register on February 5.

The CBP used the same language in a filing about tariffs on Canada, also scheduled to be published on Wednesday.

Details on the CBP’s order requiring “formal entry” for shipments from Canada and China follows US President Donald Trump issuing executive actions imposing tariffs on goods from those countries.

Trump’s executive orders stated that the articles applicable for tariffs would not be exempt from the so-called “de minimis exemption”, which allows low value imports to avoid duties.

Tl;dr: VP JD Vance summed it all up in one simple tweet:

The Canadians were very busy scouring the Government's tariffs site...

And now that trade war with Mexico appears to be over, Trump just has to repeat the same with Canada when he speaks to Trudeau at 3pm ET today.

As for China, we doubt that particular trade war will be as easy to win but who knows: Trump is certainly on a roll.

In any case, the market is certainly delighted with the outcome, and the Mexican peso is surging...

TSY yields are rising (shouldn't they fall on non-inflationary, non-tariffs?)...

Oil prices have plunged, erasing overnight tariff-driven gains...

Bitcoin is ripping higher (as we suppose this means no large drop in global liquidity?)

And US equities are reversing the large losses overnight quite rapidly...

Now, what will the Main stream Media say after doom-mongering all morning about Trump's 'catastrophic' tariffs?
As I said. His one seat lead in Congress and three in the Senate did this in. Too many donors would have been hurt. That imo was what resulted in Trump accepting THE SAME DEAL PROPOSED IN DECEMBER LAST YEAR.

And vendors will still see a net loss imo. People are pissed up here, and planning to switch products, and travel elsewhere anyway.

The problem is small, but with Trump its not thought out, not logical, and this delay is to allow him to get his act together regarding tariffs. In 30 days time we shall what Trump does. Now he wants more US banking in Canada. His illogical demands will continue. Time would tell.
It'd be ridiculous if he doesn't ask for more. threatening tariffs on trillions worth of trade and damage relations with your closest ally just to get what? A 1.3 billion dollar border plan to address less than 2% of illegal migrants and less than 1% of fentanyl? This deal is peanuts, it could have been talked about over a single phone call. If it's so easy for one person to overturn trade agreements for so little, how can you trust the US going forward?

This was all shit we would have agreed to. He agreed to the same deal 2-3 months ago.

How were "feet being dragged"?
Plans were released Dec 2024 and over 60% had been implemented by the second week of 2025.
The rest will take time due to delivery time and training on new equipment and procedures but they are underway now.
Also hiring more CBSA officers and training them as well is not a 2 week or evan 30 day process.
Trudeau flew out to Mar-a-Lago to talk to him.

Now Trump wants the same deal already offered.

Trump folded.

You can’t spin it. Your 3 time blackface Trudeau folded!

Compare it to this release from Jan 15th. as part of the Border defence plan annouced Dec. 2024.
One new element appears to be the appointment of a "fentanyl tsar" and a $200m intelligence directive.

I think trump won, he never wanted tariffs. China sells chemicals to the cartel for them to make fentanyl. He got the Mexicans to beef up their border patrol. He wants a beefed up canadian border so illegals don't get in, not only drugs, which Trudeau agreed to. Usa cities are in ruins like ours are from being taken over by junkies.

Yup, I cancelled my trips to Vegas in Mar 2026, Cape Cod in May, Daytona in August and Nashville in October.
Might switch up to a couple trips to the Caribbean.

So.....a bureaucrat who will do the exact same job of coordination already occuring, just either a different name. And a reshuffling of folder names at intelligence slightly rewritten to reflect new priorities?

Hey, glad to see more money spent, to keep guns out of here. But you are seriously thinking in the end it's a massive win? It's a win/win. We lost nothing.

My mistake, the $200m intelligence directive was not new, it is towrads the bottom of the release from DEC 2024.

" The establishment of a Joint Intelligence Group, which will expand the RCMP and the Communications Security Establishment’s intelligence collection capacity, enabling these agencies to target transnational organized crime and fentanyl trafficking more effectively."

Massive cope lol.
Yeah he never wanted tariffs.
Which is why he put tariffs.
He bluffed and then he blinked.

Trump threatened tariffs and we were scared beyond belief. Trump told creampuff Trudeau what he wanted and Trudeau said "whatever you say sir." Trump knew the threat of tariffs is all he needed to do.

Canada has been trying to work with the US on strengthening the border for years.. Remember all those people crossing into Canada while sleepy Joe was in charge and the crisis it causes in Quebec and Toronto? How soon we forget. Stopping illegal migration is important for Canada, it has a huge cost to us even without the drugs.
