Dodgers have ridiculous depth (injury risks yes), but they have the following starters for 2024 that look good to start the season as of now
Ohtani
Yamamoto
Snell
Glasnow
Kershaw
May
Gonsolin
Stone
And now we know why they invented the term "an embarrassment of riches".

So the other part of this deal is the players the Jays eat up $11M of useless contract in Myles Straw ($5M in 2025, $6M in 2026).

We can question the decisions the Jays make, but I think we should be able to generally agree that the Jays tend to operate in a safe, conservative and consistent manner.. They are not taking on this money without knowing they have a real shot here. Or one would hope anyway!

from Wikipedia:

"On April 9, 2022, Straw signed a 5-year, $25 million extension with the Guardians. In 2022 he had the lowest slugging percentage and the lowest OPS (.564) in the majors, the lowest barrel percentage (0.7%), and the highest percentage of balls hit to the opposite field (36.1%). He batted .221/.291/.273 in 535 at bats, with no home runs, 32 RBI, and 21 stolen bases in 22 attempts. On defense, he won a Gold Glove Award in center field.

In 2023, he batted .238/.301/.297, with one home run and a league-leading six sacrifice hits, had the lowest percentage of hard-hit balls of all AL players (18.0%), and had the lowest barrel percentage (0.5%). "

It's like re-signing Kevin Kiermeier, at half the price.

But at least we picked up a guy whose OPS has been a consistent .600 for the last 2 years.

When will the Jays realize that they have to outbid the competition by 10-20% to get them here. The shiny new training facility and cup holders don't seem to providing enough allure.
L.A. is not where I would want to play.

They're due for a major quake and we've learned that they don't the services to deal with it.

I mean if you're Japanese and want to play on the West Coast why not choose Seattle.

That’s what Ichiro did. When it comes to the Dodgers…. I love LA as I’ve mentioned a few times here, I have family very high up in the Dodgers head office. My love for Teoscar, and made bitterness of the worst trade in Blue Jays history, has now subsided with Hernandez being a Dodger. I’m content with that. I have gone to so many Dodger games the last few years. I love the team.

But I must say, these guys are making a salary cap inevitable.

Finally, MLB radio SiriusXM reporting the Blue Jays have signed Santander to five years.

Jays have signed Santander, $92.5 million over five years!!!!
$18.5 million per year is somewhat reasonable. We need more but this is a good start.

I would want to go somewhere where I can win first and foremost.

I would like to see them get Pete Alonso, but that would push Guerrero to third base more often. I still believe in Addison Barger and I would like to see him develop and at least get another chance to be a full-time third baseman. That guy has such solid plate coverage and bat speed. Tough to give up on him there’s something there and I feel it in my bones lol.

Jonatan Clase is pretty exciting. His first year in the big leagues as a 21/22 year-old had three stolen bases in 61 at bat hitting .246. That’s on pace for 30 stolen base season. That may be wishful thinking, but I would take that over George Springer in a heartbeat as the new lead off hitter. Hopefully he has a good spring and works his way into regular play somehow.

I'm predicting that the Jays will not make any more impactful moves, especially regarding free agency. Atkins feels like he's gotten himself off the hook with Santander. BTW, I heard that Buster Olney said that in 6 months the Jays will regret the signing.

I guess that a trade is possible. Do they have enough young guys to trade for some quality. I heard that Loperfido may get squeezed out because of Santander.

Otherwise, it's the same old, same old. Rely on prospects, aging vets, international signings and hope that others revert to peak years. They are done making big moves.

TBH, I forgot one tiny thing they could do. Fucking sign Vladdy. I think his deadline is a month away. I think if Bo isn't hitting around .280 at the break and they're not in the playoff mix, they'll trade him for prospects.

I certainly hope so. That guy is like a B side AAA Shawn Green. Half Shawn Green with no power and half Calvin Biggio lol.

I am truly excited about Jonatan Clase. He’s the guy I want to see more of. I hope he has a good spring and forces his way into the lineup. That guy can steal bases with his eyes closed.

Heard on TSN today that the Jays are interested in Max Scherzer, despite his age(40) and lack of playing time in the last 2 years(88.1 innings combined).

I read that yesterday. But....he wants to play on a team that can win this year.

Maybe it means he'd be more willing to sign with the Jays if they get Alonso.
