What is "affordable housing"?

We keep hearing politicians use the term "affordable housing". But what does it mean exactly?

Have they somehow discovered a way to convince builders to build homes cheaper so that they can be sold for less?

Or should the term really be "subsidized housing"? If yes, why not use that term instead, and who is doing the subsidizing and where is the money coming from?

btw I want 10 subsidized units at various locations in the city. Where can I get them?

Tax payers are subsidizing these "affordable homes".
Taxpayers subsidize everything that is subsidized. The politicians don't pay for it. You do.

Sounds like you want people to live in parks, ravines, under overpasses/bridges/manhole covers, eh, eh?

Exactly...which is why I asked why they don't just call it "subsidized"?
Too real?
Do some people get fooled into thinking it's magically just "affordable"?

On the slopes of Mount Parnassus, Greece
Jagmeet was asked this point blank in an interview once and all he could muster was a word salad response.

I have a friend who is living in Oakville who is paying 1200 for a 1 bedroom apartment. It's a co-op rent to income deal of some sorts. He's been there 30 years now. Is that what they mean?

Do you want Canadian taxpayers to pay to house all the unhoused people in Canada? A simple yes or no will suffice.

I have been to Spain many times. I have never seen a homeless person, and their population is 8 million more than Canada's.

Stats says there are about 30k homeless in Spain, mostly immigrants. But they have 22k shelters. In 2023 they addressed the situation by passing a law against inequalities and preventing and solving homelessness.

Maybe we should study what they do and how?

To be fair, Taxpayers don't pay for this. The Bank of Canada does and the tax payers are indebted to the Bank for eternity. 😁

That said, hard working peoples and productive families should be given opportunities to afford housing, whether by subsidizing, state controlled development, or loan reform.

Homelessness is a totalling different issue from housing imo. Many Homeless people prefer being on the streets.
