Unpopular opinion in this demographic but:
Medical science is vocational too. It’s also overrun and mostly completely contentious. We can’t even solve the protein folding problem but we probably have hundreds of conflicting studies on caffeine and nut size or something equally stupid.Wow. Universities produce the vast majority of the basic science and medicine which has made the USA and the west the economic powerhouses they are.
There are not enough of the vocational jobs nor factory jobs to absorb those non uni attending students.
Look at that vast pool of underemployed men with little prospects. They used to work mining, factory, and transport jobs that paid well enough. Those jobs don't exist anymore.
Instead we send non-intellects to university, get them through and put them in jobs that they are already insufficiently intelligent to do. These jobs could actually be done by those not overeducated (many clerical positions in government and other organization) and they would be good at it and happy doing it. The ones with the education think they are better than those jobs and are waiting for the CEO position to open up for them.Wow. Universities produce the vast majority of the basic science and medicine which has made the USA and the west the economic powerhouses they are.

as if there are jobs to absorb specialists in philosophy, art history, family studies, anthropology, journalism, photography, religious studies, liberal arts, ethnic studies...Wow. Ye. I’m too idealistic. Just in a different way than some others here.Unfortunately, in a so-called capitalistic world that cannot be done and there will never be some utopia. It'll be interesting to see how or if basic income will come into play in North America because AI is already on the verge to take over tons of jobs no different than what happened to the automobile industry years ago. Lawyers, admin workers, etc. will be effected in some way due to the rise of AI. A lot of people already use good apps/software to figure out a lot of things than hiring folks. The big movie industry is also worried about AI so they don't have to pay actors/actresses big bucks and more profit for them. It'll be interesting to see how the general public handles things moving forward. I'd say there's gonna be quite a change happening in the 5 or 10 years especially with boomers on the verge or retiring and declining.
You make valid points, but unfortunately there's tons of uni grads who are dumb AF or lack tons of basic common sense (I've seen this; or some play dumb on purpose due to the agenda or profit at hand of course). I've met a few doctors in my time who give the wrong advice based on what I know and I just walked away.
