One of the dumbest organization principles ever - if you are good and judicious w your money you get punished in next year's budget. I always made a point to scour every unit that hit their budgets or went over with a fine toothed comb. Those who came in under were not punished by having their budgets cut.

Unpopular opinion in this demographic but:

I think we should go back (like all-the-way-fuckingback) to a more classical model of higher education for universities, where only the most intelligent and talented are allowed in, and study a broad range of things in a more polymathic way. Math, science, philosophy, art, music, languages, literature etc. are all studied there, and the universities are kept small for the best and brightest. Specializations could emerge long after.

And everyone else could do something vocational, like most of them were meant to. Not everyone is meant to be an intellectual. Few are.

If I were a dictator I would shut all this research and degree mill shit down. It would be cheaper than making everyone pay for absolute garbage “expert” knowledge being churned out.

I know a lot of people will screech at me and say this holds back “progress” but I’m not an accelerationist there and think it’s better to produce less things that are higher quality, more slowly and deliberately (applies to my view on tech as well as research). Anything more than that is wasteful wheel spinning and a waste of money and just life itself. Totally low value garbage.

Universities don’t need 50k mediocre students who don’t even want to be there 🤷🏻‍♀️ and we don’t need hundreds of thousands of completely retarded “research” papers on vapid topics. We live in the Dark Ages. Definitely a Kali Yuga.

Wow. Universities produce the vast majority of the basic science and medicine which has made the USA and the west the economic powerhouses they are.
There are not enough of the vocational jobs nor factory jobs to absorb those non uni attending students.
Look at that vast pool of underemployed men with little prospects. They used to work mining, factory, and transport jobs that paid well enough. Those jobs don't exist anymore.

Medical science is vocational too. It’s also overrun and mostly completely contentious. We can’t even solve the protein folding problem but we probably have hundreds of conflicting studies on caffeine and nut size or something equally stupid.

…none of that made us economic powerhouses. Unless industry sponsored ofc

Instead we send non-intellects to university, get them through and put them in jobs that they are already insufficiently intelligent to do. These jobs could actually be done by those not overeducated (many clerical positions in government and other organization) and they would be good at it and happy doing it. The ones with the education think they are better than those jobs and are waiting for the CEO position to open up for them.

Unfortunately, in a so-called capitalistic world that cannot be done and there will never be some utopia. It'll be interesting to see how or if basic income will come into play in North America because AI is already on the verge to take over tons of jobs no different than what happened to the automobile industry years ago. Lawyers, admin workers, etc. will be effected in some way due to the rise of AI. A lot of people already use good apps/software to figure out a lot of things than hiring folks. The big movie industry is also worried about AI so they don't have to pay actors/actresses big bucks and more profit for them. It'll be interesting to see how the general public handles things moving forward. I'd say there's gonna be quite a change happening in the 5 or 10 years especially with boomers on the verge or retiring and declining.

You make valid points, but unfortunately there's tons of uni grads who are dumb AF or lack tons of basic common sense (I've seen this; or some play dumb on purpose due to the agenda or profit at hand of course). I've met a few doctors in my time who give the wrong advice based on what I know and I just walked away.

as if there are jobs to absorb specialists in philosophy, art history, family studies, anthropology, journalism, photography, religious studies, liberal arts, ethnic studies...

Given that the vast majority of us are not experts in anything at all, we'd be making uninformed comments on what research is needed and what isn't.
Without knowing what the actual research is, or how it may be useful, calling it 'useless' is basically saying "I am not interested or do not understand it, therefore.....".
Research should be freely funded, as vapid as it may sound to some (or most).
Sometimes one research can use results of another to innovate.
Research builds human capital and a knowledge base so even if it is seems useless, it is still useful in that sense.
Otherwise we box ourself into funding research of a certain type, by people of a certain type.
That's a rut we do not want to get stuck in.
The process of acquiring funding for said research will itself take care of which ones get funded and which ones don't.
Also the old school way of educating people or producing things does not work.
It is elitist firstly because the "intelligent" ones are ones that practice rote learning.
Score high in tests and you are 'intelligent' enough to attend college.
It produces a lot of educated fools.
Similarly producing less things of high quality is not needed.
We should produce a lot of things.
Quality standards of products produced or innovated should depend on its usage.
A medical device, or a rocket component may need to be of high quality.
A kitchen gadget that one can do without, may be not so much.

(I’m kidding, philosophy is important and closely connected to pure maths, and basically constitutes the entire Western canon of Reason Itself. And can be applied to every discipline including science. It’s very meta. But yeah, most people don’t need to be like that LOL.)

The vast amount of products/services available compared to say (hypothetically speaking of course) one company making all kitchen utensils doesn't help the economy grow either. A rich person can brag they paid $100 for 1 spoon say if it's made out of good grade stainless steel and I can get one similar for a bit less with a lesser brand name is solely due to bragging rights. Multimillionaires who drive supercars usually do it for the notion of "because I can" where as someone else will say the maintenance isn't worth it and the depreciation after buying a vehicle generally is meh. I for one enjoy competition and seeing tons of products out there. It gives people the chance to grow the economy by spending their money on what they like while others wouldn't even think twice for something.

Ye. I’m too idealistic. Just in a different way than some others here.

(re. doctors I’ve seen some plumbers have better diagnostic skills than some GPs I’ve been stuck with 😂.)
