Because scanning a bottle of booze is what everyone who invests in themselves aspires to do as a career.
Oh so sad, the lowers should all live in a gutter for not doing more in life!

LCBO is an institution fought for by for our gtand parents (at least for the millennials). It was a generation who fought the war then came home and fought for a life where you could just work at the plant and your wife part time in retail and raise a family with a white picket fence home. It is the epitome of the American dream, but apparently a lot of the North American right hate the concept of fair wages and safe working conditions that our ancestors fought so hard to gurantee.

Per capita in Alberta is higher despite being mostly privatized which shatters the illusion that public is the better way.
Add to that more choice and convenience and it makes sense.

Also factor in the expense for Ontario to run retail and operations over $1 billion!
Alberta is higher because they pay more than we do.

That $1 billion operating expense employees people and returns a $2 billion profit.

Skoob was probably comparing tax returns from alcohol sale while ignoring the $2.5 billion in retail profit the LCBO sends Ontario every year.

DoFo said the were 'essential workers'.
That means they need to be paid accordingly.
Not quite...stores that sell booze are essential. Johnny-drop-out scanning a bottle at the checkout is not essential...it's a charity gig.

You think DoFo would just open the LCBO stores with no workers?
You are quite daft.

Yet we all go to school to hear teacher say things like "well someone has to dig ditches"

Does it make you mad that the lower educated and less skilled aren't paid minimum wage, or just outright slaves?

It's funny cause I swear the most of you would complain about immigration in Canada, but fail.to connect how privatizing the LCBO would just invite small enterprises who would exclusively hire TFWs at the expense of local men and women trying to provide for their families.
LCBO employees are not paid below minimum wage.
Are you against immigrants being hired?

Not sure what you're trying to say here.

So you're saying someone who scans a bottle of booze at a checkout counter should be paid as well as an engineer?
If someone is a 3rd generation checkout clerk at a retail store, then I would strongly consider where things went wrong.

So remove the $1 billion operating expense...you think privatization in Ontario wouldn't generate the same or better for the province considering there will be 3x the number of retailers?
btw retailers employ people. Private business owners are also people.

How dare they demand to have a livable wage.

Then when cheap labour immigrates to Canada, you have the nerve to ask "Why is this happening?".
So giving someone a job is charity? Explain in your view then why it's not...unless you actually believe it is.

I don't have a problem with immigrants do you?
I have a problem with bringing in too many people without a solid plan for how to accommodate them.

But you lose the mark up revenue, which is were the bulk of the money comes from. It won't generate the same or better. It will be pocketed by The Big Corps.

These private owners you talk about will mostly be Loblaws and Walmart.

How does negotiating your work agreement become charity?

Yes I have a problem. If we have a system that doesn't provide fair wages for all workers it turns into a blunder and poverty country. Why wouldn't you want people to come here to join a strong workforce?

Explain why you think big corps should make extra billions but workers (the people that actually delivery the goods and services) should make less?

Negotiating your terms of employment is not charity. However, to negotiate effectively, you have to correctly understand the value of your contribution to the business. If you want more than what those services could be acquired for in the labour market, you are asking for charity.

The system you seem to have a problem with is the system of reality (like the character in the Matrix who betrays Neo because he decides he prefers illusion over reality). I agree that a successful society must hold opportunity for individuals at all levels of income. However, it isn't reality to expect to be overpaid simply because others earn more.

Corporations are only a revenue vehicle for real people who work in the business and for investors in the business. The former are the brains of the business and the latter take risks that allow the business to grow, and to survive difficult cycles in its operations. Of course their efforts are FAR more valuable than those of individuals who have jobs that have simply yet to be automated out of existence.

In context, there is no explaining why retail workers at the LCBO should be paid ANY more than retail workers at Shoe Locker. No explanations apart from charity on behalf of the public, that is.

I spent 6 years at UBC, you can guess again. I work at the LCBO to deal with summer time idleness and have lots of respect for my coworkers there.
But you have to admit that snow plow drivers don't work in the summer, so it wasn't a terrible guess. ;)
