Online hate and death threats

The student in this article has received a huge amount of online hate and death threats for sharing a post on social media of how he uses a university food program to get by each month. English not being his first language, he described it as a "food bank", which probably triggered those who were quick to judge him.

The student def. learned a lesson, maturity will come with age, but I can't imagine being a student and living on your own in this day and age. There needs to be a balance, use the banks to compensate a bit but for to take everything - thats a little extreme as it is meant for those who are struggling. Pay for the food and cut back on nice to have things if you want to save money.

Where did it state that he was "taking everything"? I didn't see that in the article but maybe it was on social media (I don't have any SM really). The website for the program says to "take as much as you need" but to keep in mind that "others are in need as well". I'm guessing there are some food items not available from the program and that he would need to purchase them.

Much of the hate this student received was due to a lie being told that he earned $97,000/year working for TD bank. Which is impossible, given that he is on a student visa and can only work part-time. He did intern for TD bank for 17 weeks last year or so, but didn't earn anywhere close to $97,000.

I'm certainly one who didn't read it properly and jumped the gun thinking some sort of cheating was involved..my bad...possibly saw the 97k headline and reacted. Turns out he was a co-op student/intern and the team he was in (data science) has roles where the typical salary is around $97K. While international students are meant to prove some sort of sustainable funding/some level of funds to support themselves, the cost of living has gone nuts and it's good these programs are available. This particular case is a food bank designed for uni students specifically.

Thanks for your post. It shows you have true character and aren't afraid to admit when you're wrong, unlike the majority here who'll just double and triple down on their arguments.

SM is really out of control these days. What if someone who believed the lies about this student actually followed through with the threats?

I saw this a while back, and you hit the nail on the head. I still haven't fully read all the details, but it was $97K that caused a shit storm and my initial reaction not good as I just believed that to be true without knowing all the true facts.

This is one of the mistakes that happen when people 'feel' language instead of actually reading what's written or listening to what's said.

One of my sisters once said "I listen for key words and tone of voice", which is a big reason why she's misunderstood most of what I've ever said to her, (and why she never understands jokes). She'll then tell someone else that I said something completely different, because 'that's what I felt you meant'.

That approach only works when communicating with someone who is intentionally saying things that they don't mean, or someone who is inarticulate.

Language is meant to be objectively understood, not subjectively felt.
