Yes, it's like when you occasionally have to go to a bank teller. You can't wish the bank teller, "Merry Christmas." You have to wish the bank teller, "happy holidays," in order to be politically correct.....LMAO
Why, did you get shit from a bank teller wishing them Merry Christmas? I have in the past and not once has anyone ever chastized me for it but then again I'm a likable fella. ;)

Yeah, any girl guides that did go to them, imagine that. . And what you fail to grasp, is that Christmas is and always has been part of Canadas Heritage…We even have a stat day for it…
IMO the Santa Clause parade is far from Christmas tradition, It's overly commercialized. All the floats are from businesses promoting their business. To me, Christmas is important to spend time with loved ones.

I don't think the Girl Guides ever did participate.

But enjoy this new outrage for a little while. It's clearly far more important than any other news.
They probably did.
There was a big shift by the Girl Guides to secularism about 10 years or so ago, and this sounds like it is just a consequence of that.
Depending on how the Santa parade was run, I would consider it pretty secular, but I can also see a chapter just deciding to draw a bright shiny line across the board.

Very likely the mayor or some other local politician is just hyping this up for reactionary cred.

I mean, it isn't like girl guides can't attend the parade. They aren't banning troop members from going to the thing.
They just won't go as an organization.

Big difference between attending and participating. Or can anyone just join the parade.

I did a little light digging. The first recorded parade in Toronto was in 1905. That puts it over the century mark. I think by most definitions that enters heritage and tradition territory. Kind of like the Ex and air show ( which a lot want to cancel too).

Flip it around a bit. A lot of faiths Christian and Muslim are against pride. Yet, Girl guides
At Girl Guides, we love a good parade. Even better – when the parade is all about positivity and inclusivity.
Apparently not…Now all of a sudden…parents whose faith doesn’t align don’t matter so much.

Mr Orifice is such a curmudgeon, no one wants to ban Christmas Parades. My grandfather considered it important that his family integrate into Canadian Society. He led by example, he played the Sousaphone with the Earlscourt Marching Band during the Santa Claus Parade. He passed away within three years after he stopped.

Maybe if I invite Mr. Orifice to the Von Christmas Dinner, it may give him a sunnier disposition. Here's a Christmas favorite of the family.

You do realize that pre 1950, Toronto had a homogenous Anglo population and church going and publicly worshipping were considered automatic and most people were Christians, huh?

1950 Toronto and 2023 Toronto have fuck all in common with each other.

I would guess that those little girls can join that parade under some other umbrella than the GG. Maybe there's a "Santa's Little Elves in the Xmas Parade" group or something like that?

I do, and as I asked you once before. Do you not know there’s more to Canada than Toronto? And that lots of places and areas still have heavy concentrations of the same?

Apparently not.

Christmas is a pagan holiday which was banned by the church state for hundred of years before they finally gave up and took it over. If Marge greenes utopia of church running the government was fully realized then Christmas most certainly should be banned along with homosexual rights

Well, you DID specifically mention Toronto, didn't you?

Nice deflection though.

Not at all. if anything it makes the point of people in Toronto thinking they are the only people that matter. Or don’t know there’s mores to Canada.

Girl guides Canada is based in Toronto. The specific parade in question is in Kanata. Why the fuck do you care if it’s such an inconsequential thing…..

And you might have read the words our heritage and traditions more than once. Most people would argue something that’s been around for 100 years is a tradition and part of our heritage. Hence the reference to 1905.

That’s a bunch of fuzzy woke logic you have there Mandrill. Plus ignoring apparent hypocrisy with respect to the pride parade

I presume any group can submit a float.
This policy by Girl Guides seems to just be that Girl Guides groups can't submit a float under the name of the organization.

The reporting tries very hard to imply that the Girl Guides is saying "if you are a girl guide, you can't go to the parade", but that seems incredibly unlikely.

I did a little light digging. The first recorded parade in Toronto was in 1905. That puts it over the century mark. I think by most definitions that enters heritage and tradition territory.
The objection seems to be rooted in their embrace of a very strict approach to secularism.
Like I said, I would view a Santa Claus parade as pretty damn secular, personally.

Flip it around a bit. A lot of faiths Christian and Muslim are against pride. Yet, Girl guides

But the policy isn't rooted in "nothing that offends the faith of our members".
It's a policy based in an embrace of secularism (presumably in response to their former explicitly Christian outlook).

No contradiction there. Pride isn't based in any religion.
