To Kill a Mockingbird was taught to me in grade 12. In my opinion it should be taught to grade 7s. The revelatory moment in the courtroom and after when Jem realizes the world is unfair and cruel is one of the great written pieces of literature. It profoundly shakes anyone with a hint of empathy. And teaching at about the same age Jem is in the book would do more to mitigate racism than any supposed woke diversity training ever could.
