There's something about Schenn that Dubas doesn't like and some about Holl that Dubas likes.
That's a good point. Might not be worth giving up asset(s) just to replace Holl with Schenn.

Schenn has always been slow(pylon-like) , no?
Yes, he is slow. There is no denying that. His stats this year are good though.
He has 258 hits. Tops in the league. He's also plus 9 on a bad Vancouver team.
Ron Hainsey was also slow but he was very effective. Schenn though is no Hainsey.

Schenn was playing with Hughes. Both are top 2 in +/- in Vancouver.
Their games compliment each other. Schenn is physical and clears the front of the net. That is something Hughes is not.
Hughes can cover for him when he gets beat, retrieve pucks, and exit the zone with his dynamic skating.

Sandin to Washington for Erik Gustafsson and (Boston) first-round pick.

Have to think the Leafs are going to try to flip that first for other value at the deadline

The value is fine for Toronto, but it doesn't make sense in terms of going all in (without a follow up move) as Sandin is a bit better than Gustafsson (despite Gustafsson's points)

Gustafsson does serve a role as a power play specialist, but at even strength he is a mess defensively. Though it's been his best year in a while.
Gustafsson plus whatever they get with that first should help the Leafs more in 22/23 than Sandin.

Sandin I just couldn't see playing in the playoffs. He's too small for a defenseman. Regular season is fine but not for the playoffs. Small players need to be dynamic skaters and his skating is not dynamic. He couldn't hold off the bigger forwards. Still I'm surprised they traded him. I'm even more surprised what they got for him. An excellent return. A first rounder and a player. Gustafsson is Washington's leading point producing defenseman. Their power play guy. Probably same player as Sandin just older and bigger.

Once upon a time Sandin was ahead of Lili but at this stage Lili is much better. Especially for playoffs.

Engvall to NYI, Leafs get NYI 3rd round pick. Luke Schenn is a Leaf. This coming in fast. 2023 3rd round pick for Schenn. $2.25M in cap space free.

I liked Engvall. He's big and he's fast. Sadly though he has no grit. He also didn't accomplish much last playoffs. For a 3rd rounder.
With Acciari and Lafferty it made Engvall expendable. Plus, he is on an expiring contract.

Excellent pick up on Schenn. The biggest hitter in the league. Also for a 3rd rounder so it's like trading Engvall for Schenn.
Leafs could utilize Schenn the same way TB did. Not for every game but perhaps early to set the tone.

Once they trade Kerfoot for cap space so they can bring in Murray they'll be all set.
Or perhaps they could trade Murray for a goalie that has a glove hand.

Do you feel comfortable about Murray staying healthy if he comes back? If I'm Dubas, I'm shopping for a goalie.

No, but Dubas likes him. They got Rittich one year for a 3rd rounder as the 3rd goalie insurance. He may do the same.

Gustafsson is worse than Holl, when it comes to being nervous watching them play in the defensive zone.

I think that Dubas is taking a page out of the Blue Jays playbook.

The Jays traded some of the Dominicans to change the culture of the clubhouse and make it more serious. Dubas is trading some of the "chicken Swede" contingent to make the team grittier.

p.s. I don't actually believe the chicken Swede characterization, not since I watched Salming. I was mainly talking about players who weren't physical enough either due to size (Sandin) or playing physical was not their style (Engvall) and because they are both Swedish used the Don Cherry reference.

p.p.s. I think Dubas trading 2 Swedes was more of a coincidence than the Jays trading two Dominicans which I think was more of a game plan.
