This is not limited to Barefax or Ottawa. It is everywhere. A lack of interest in strip bars and worsening. Dancers don't make money and hence trying to milk the few remaining strip bar customers as much as they can and in any way they can.
I remember Super Sex club in downtown Montreal in the 90's packed with customers since they opened at noon till midnight. I went back in 2016 at 6 pm and there were a few customers bored. They closed after. Strip dances one after another and free buffet twice a day. Neighboring strip bars closed even before Super Sex did. The few remaining Montreal clubs now are closed daytime and open at 6 or 7 pm.
I don't know the reason for lack of interest in strip bars past two decades.
1- May be a ban on smoking (though I loved it) was a factor?
2- May be the internet and easy availability of escorts was a factor. I was expecting an upturn in strip bar business once they made seeing escorts illegal in 2014 but that never materialized.
3- May be expensive drinks and cover fees was a factor but the bars had to make up for lost business.
4- May be expensive dances but the price have been $20 per song since 2001.
5- May be dancers milking too much dollars out of few remaining customers using different tricks (in my case most at Barefax start in the middle of song charging full, or miscounting the number of songs or not taking off everything after 2 or even in Barefax's cases after 3 songs. More or less same experience at PM and Pigales not as bad as Barefax though).
6 - May be long breaks between stage dances (makes being there so boring) or some dancers not stripping but topless dancing (this problem is acute especially at Barefax). A tactic to keep customers curious and go for private dancer of more than 3 songs.
In my case not frequenting strip bars that often anymore is the last two factors, reason number 5.and 6.
While I'm not at all familiar with the situation in Montreal, I'm similarly puzzled about the more recent "lack of interest in strip bars" locally.
As I may have posted elsewhere (so please forgive the repetition if so), I had hoped that the closure of Barb's would at least tend to reinforce the supply of dancers at other area clubs but this just has not seemed to have occurred.
In recent years most of my SC trips have been afternoon visits to the 'Mate and, to be fair, there were some afternoons when it was very slow there pre-covid. Recent visits to the PM have been somewhat disappointing as certain fave dancers apparently have moved to another club (77) and the remaining regulars are not quite my type or else seem too conservative in the CR, so these factors may have affected my perception of the club. Perhaps the SC scene will end up limited to the Gatineau clubs - I suppose fewer clubs with more dancers is better than a few more clubs but each with a slow/dead atmosphere.
Certainly afternoons have always been a good deal calmer in atmosphere than evenings in the past, but the lethargic atmosphere at the PM on recent visits has me concerned that afternoon opening will soon be curtailed as at the 'Fax.
The memories of my first ventures into the Ottawa SC scene in the late 90s and always evening/latenight now have an almost hallucinatory quality as if I can't quite trust the recollection of how things were then. Many memories of nights at Barb's when the place was really packed (to the point where leaving one's seat to go the the CR almost certainly meant standing for awhile afterwards as the chair was quickly taken by another patron) and there could be 20 or more dancers (on one evening more than 30) for the 11:00 pm 'showcase'. The atmosphere was often the same at the 'Fax, especially on Th/Fr/Sat nights.
It's difficult to imagine how/why this has changed so radically, but I guess a lack of patrons has affected dancer interest and then fewer quality dancers ( I like to be respectful and there are certainly differing tastes in dancer look/physique) has in turn made for fewer patrons and this now seems to be an inexorable spiral at the clubs but I hope not - guess I'm not too optimistic but maybe things will stabilize.
The midwinter period after the holiday season has always been bleak but perhaps I'll drop by the 'Mate (hoping to see a fave) or 77 in the coming weeks to see how things are. Hope those who visit any club will post about their experience/impressions.
(Guess this a a bit of a hijack posted in Barefax thread, but I was prompted by H_K's preceding post.)
