If it is impossible to make children under 5 properly mask up, which I don't disagree with you on this point, then how did we do them a disservice with masking and lockdown in the previous years since masks didn't work and were impossible to mask them??

Masks definitely works when everyone wears them. An example is BOJO. He visited the Covid patients in a hospital and despite being urged to wear a mask, he did not do so.
We know how that panned out with him. But tell me why all doctors, nurses and health care workers wear the masks in hospital, if you have the evidence that "it does not work"?
Except they don't. N95 are generally used only in areas with high concentration of infectious people. Most hospital staff wear level 3 medical masks.
The same stupid argument again and again. N95 are deigned to reduce the risk of the mask wearer getting infected. Surgical masks are designed to reduce the risk of the mask wearer infecting others. Do we also need to go back and look at actual testing data that shows a properly worn N95 is not that much better than a properly worn surgical mask? Should we also go back and discuss how an improperly fitted N95 or an N95 over facial hair significantly cuts their effectiveness?
And there's that study that C_M posted that showed the levels of infection on the OUTSIDE of medical masks (not N95). Pretty clearly shows that they work pretty well.
Thats about what I've seen too in shopping malls, stores and office buildings.

I went to the Ashley's warehouse sale today. Hundreds of people. At least 90% had masks.
I was grocery shopping today and all the cashiers were masked and I'd say at least 50% of the shoppers were masked.
The cashiers all masked I believe, but the 50% part you're pulling out of your ass
I was surprised but it is true. Granted majority of the masked were women, didn't notice too many dudes masked except for the older ones.
