Although the CBC has some good programs, I've always found it mystifying why we have to support the CBC, something it should do on it's own like other networks.

I'll make it a little clearer:
We should not be funding content that is not good enough to stand on its own merits.
The US has 10x the market.
Its a bit like you running a coffee shop and saying you have to stand on your own merit when starbucks moves in next door and uses free samples for a month to put you out of business.

If you like their shit overpriced government coffee so much, then you pay for it.
Canadians should not be forced to prop up an unsuccessful business model so leftists can have a free media bullhorn.

A billion dollars to be a political shill is outrageous.
How is the CBC a "political shill"?

The CBC is really the only apolitical news organization in this country, especially when compared to the hard right turn Postmedia has taken since 2014.

And to the wanker calling CBC "state run news," you're getting your interpretation of what 'state run' means from the bastion of sensibility Pissbaby Pierre, aren't you?

Then scale. If you want to play the market size card, then I guess small businesses have no chance and should not bother. There are plenty of real life examples of small businesses succeeding on their own.

Bottom line is the CBC needs to put on their big boy pants and figure out how to survive without taxpayer money. Otherwise they perish. Simple. Right now we need every available dollar spent on non-luxury items such as healthcare, education, infrastructure, poverty and debt reduction.

I resent anyone that forces me to fund poor quality and imposes minimum content on us. I watch what I want, when I want and I am happy to pay for it if the quality is there. After a lifetime of subscribing to cable, I cut that cord because the quality was no longer what I could accept for the ever increasing price I pay. Now I don't have channels I don't need or want forced on me and I watch what I want.

I agree squash the CBC like the bug that it is.

Hard working politicians shouldn't be exposed for taking graft from lobbyists nor stealing from public coffers. Those filthy foreigners Vassy Kapelos and Ian Hanomansing should be deported back to where they came from.

Make Canada Great Again.

It's not "fake news" or "propaganda" just because you don't agree with it.
Oh believe me, I’ll never tell my political leanings because my option doesn’t matter.

What matters is a billion dollar sink hole that parrots what the govt wants.

No govt should control a nation wide media.

Any truly objective viewer can see the liberal bias of the CBC

Their anchor Rosemary Barton & the CBC sued the conservative party
she acted like a love sick teenager when interviewing Justin Trudeau
Then gave Andrew Scheer the 'if looks could kill ' glare.

She is a disgrace

a publicly funded organization has the obligation and responsibility to be politically neutral and should strive for the highest level of Journalistic integrity
The CBC fails this miserably and its bias to the liberal party is dangerous

This is a cultural problem, which will be extremely difficult to fix via reform
It needs to be shut down

According to public record.

The Feds spent $1.4 billion on the CBC. At the same time they subsidized private corporations to the tune of $29 billion, a good chunk of it to subsidize the oil company...and some of that payout beyond oil and gas has the stench of Nortel to it.

The semi-freddo MAGAS on this board are barking up the wrong tree.

Where does one get the notion that the CBC is a "Liberal" media or nonsense like that. In reality the Conservative party has been drifting to the far right over the past few years.
Guys like Harper and Pee Pee have been offered interviews by real alt right media such as The Rebel and have accepted it. I have seen The CBC and CTV contents being very similar in political nature. i.e. they hardly can be called Liberal or Conservative in any sense. I watch the CBC and love programs like Marketplace that digs out all the dirt that is affecting Canadians, such as scammers of all natures. To lose such a Channel means that there will will one less Corporation that is prepared to take on the greedy pocket picking enterprises.
Vassy and Ian are really very watchable programs. Many Canadians will miss such Broadcasting Channels so we know that the likelihood of defunding the CBC is unlikely to succeed as Pee Pee, also wants to fire the Head of The Bank of Canada, and bring in the Crypto Currency into peoples lives. Most Canadians will be scammed by such currencies that are really Ponzi schemes in the making!!

Show us the public record that states exactly what the supposed subsidies are and how much was paid to which specific oil companies ?
Name the government department dispersing these supposed subsidies and the minister in charge ?

I say there is no such public record, as there are no subsidies ( at least before Justin Trudeau )

but hey you claim a good chunk of $29 B, so you must have the details

unless of course you just mindlessly parroted a lie
or could it be capital cost depreciation against taxable income?
available to all companies who spend money on assets , equipment etc -not a subsidy

Meanwhile

RBC: oil and gas companies poured $48 billion into government coffers | Financial Post
That could rise to $64 billion in royalties and taxes in 2023 if oil prices stay high
pays for the CBC close to thirty times, while the CBC villainizes the industry , how does that smell for you?

you are very wrong
the cash flows ARE from oil companies to government AND IN A BIG WAY

And the CBC should not be in the business of cancelling or suing the conservative party , no matter how much $ Justin gives them
The Liberals and Conservatives both fund the CBC, depending on who's in power at the time.

Why drive a wedge between them here? It's stupid. Stop it.....

I am actually quite puzzled as to why we should show d*ckheads like you anything, especially when you won't believe any of it or cherry-picks whatever shows your narrative. Beginning with the conclusion and trying to make everything fit it is the dumbest thing that you can do.....
