I have seen many videos of life returning to normal in Mariupol. Kids going to school etc.

So you are saying that on your most recent visits there life is really back to normal in spite of the town looking like Dresden in 1945. Half the population either killed or kidnapped back to Russia, yet it was really just a fake news storm in a tea cup that only lasted a couple of weeks and the folks who lost most or all of their families. The kids who are now orphans. The parents who's kids were killed, are pretty much unaffected by the fake news event that was the so called invasion. Kiddies are putting on their back packs and toddling off to class.

Strategic genius. Germans fed him false information to convince him all his senior officers were conspiring against him. So he did their work for them. Wiped out his senior military command. Rounded up most of his generals and either had them killed or sent to the gulags
Watched a documentary on him a few years back. When he was informed that the Germans were massing on the border he refused to act. When they attacked, he went to bed for a week and refused to see any of his remaining generals. Assumed the fetal position for a while. Couldn't be roused. His army was left with no command. Because he wouldn't make a decision to even fight back. Army got slaughtered.

Obviously many buildings were wiped out. How is reconstruction in Fallujah and Mosul going after the US flattened them. How many buildings including the Chinese Embassy were bombed in Belgrade by NATO ?
Stalin was a evil scumbag. He did rearm but his ego and paranoia resulted in appalling decisions that cause many military failures at the start of the German invasion. Even the best Russian generals only won battles at appalling cost in lives.
I have said I am not Russian, only an idiot with no historical knowledge would say the town is like Dresden. Is Mariupol devastated? Yes it is. But the number if dead is a fraction of Dresden, or Tokyo (135 K and 100K respectively) in fact total deaths on both sides have likely not yet surpassed those two incidents.

The big difference is that after Fallujah was destroyed nobody came on this board declaring how wonderful the new flattened version of Fallujah was and that kids were joyfully headed back to school in destroyed buildings in the middle of summer break.
I go by UN numbers as the are the least propagandized .But probably still western influenced.
I would be very shocked if there are more dead in Mariupol than in Tokyo during WWII. Tokyo was one of the deadliest air attacks in history.
That number for Dresden seems pretty off, though. It shouldn't be higher than Tokyo. I thought those kind of "Dresden was the worst ever" takes were mostly from Holocaust deniers.

Civilians die in war all the time. Its collateral damage. Russia has killed far fewer then the US killed in Iraq. Ukraine military has also killed thousands of its own citizens.
Bragging about how Russia has killed fewer people is just bragging that they are lousy at war. They are still killing and targeting civilians.

The US was in Iraq for over a decade, Russia has been in Ukraine for only a couple of months.
