The doctor is in
Perhaps the CERN hydrogen collider has malfunctioned, and transported us into an alternate reality without our knowledge… The evidence is overwhelming: 9/11, Donald Trump becoming president, Covid -19, and now Roe v Wade being overturned.

not always so easy for many.
unless you’ve been low SES (aka poor) you can’t really appreciate how hard something so basic as traveling out off state/province can be. on top of then paying for the procedure

money = freedom.
Exactly. You would need to make several appointments, take time off work (if allowed), miss income from time off recoveing, pay gas and travel expenses (transportation, lodging). It' not easy for many.

I'm actually amazed how quickly this happened to be honest. There was a leak of how things were shaping up maybe a month ago and now boom.

The vote was 6 to 3 right down party lines.

It's amazing to me that the United States was a more liberal nation 50 years ago than it is now.

But a 70% majority support abortion rights.

This is gaming the system by a small minority in defiance of majority opinion. That's equally as distressing as the decision itself.
OK, then what are you worried about? Roe was unconstitutional from the beginning and this was long time coming. If the majority supports abortion, the states can legislate accordingly. If you want the right to abortion to be enshrined in the Constitution, do it the proper way via the amendment process.

The problem with that map is that some of your grey states will flip to red in the upcoming State elections.

I don't recall the specifics, but I remember reading that by 2024, fully 2 thirds of the state legislatures will go Republican. (Could be Bill Maher now that I think of it, LOL).

More like thank god we live in Canada.
If it can happen there…. It can happen here. There are tax exempt organizations planning how to as we speak. There is a major political party using the pandemic measures and gas prices to distract the public, and create resentment. These people are motivated.

just saying.

Don't worry. In Canada we don't let people decide anything.

You can thank Ruth Bader Ginsberg's arrogance for part of this. Obama asked her to retire in his last term so he could nominate a new liberal justice and she refused. Instead she held on and died at 87 while Donald Trump was president allowing Trump to nominate a Conservative justice and stack the court.

Now I know that even if that had of happened, the vote would have been 5 to 4 in favour of overturning Roe, however, if Obama could have managed to get Merrick Garland appointed in the last year of his last term, it would have flipped.

The problem is that being a Supreme Court Justice is a lifetime appointment.

Donald Trump nominated 3 young Supreme Court justices. Age 50, 54 and 57. He changed the political makeup of the Supreme Court, potentially for the next 20 or more years.

It all comes down to the power of the Senate since the Senate approves the nomination. And the Senate votes right down party lines. If the DEMS don't control the Senate, they have no control over who sits on the court.

And Biden is on track to lose the Senate.
