I agree. Some are so adamant that they are in the right. He saw nothing wrong with what he was doing. His hands were up so he was not in the wrong in his mind at all. Which is why he got so offended when the other guy put his hand up and he walked into it. Because the other guy used his hand, gutboy lost his shit. Fully believing the other guy was wrong.
The logic makes no sense but they totally believe 1000% in themselves.

I disagree with the entire premise of this assemblage of mutts and low-lifes. But assault is assault and this is despicable, criminal behaviour from the police. The law is the law, and correct me if I am wrong but if he refused to leave the "red zone" then the police can arrest him. For an armed peace officer swat a phone from the hands of a citizen to stop the citizen from recording the interaction with him is worthy of having his badge taken from him. I want to live in a country of laws, not bullying armed cops dishing out what they feel is justice.
I wish you would sleep on this and reconsider your emotions in light of the law you have practiced for your career.
I would be more sympathetic to the "victim" if he clearly was not trying to provoke a reaction from the cop. And the reaction - which was simply to force the guy's camera out of his face - is probably not legal assault. Someone sticks a camera in your face and you push it away, is that "assault"?
Yes. That is how the law works. It is assault when you physically touch someone else. You are a lawyer. You know this.
You can’t pick and choose what assault is acceptable and which isn’t. If the cops had issue, they should have made an arrest instead of playing into what that person wanted. Which was a reaction. Cop should be dealt with according to the law.

I've always dealt with officers in a respectful way and I have never had a problem. In my younger days there were a few times I was face to face with the law in situations that could have easily escalated if I became mouthy and confrontational, instead I relaxed and spoke calmly, politely and the cops returned the favor. She or he was looking for a "omg, look at me moment" and they are lucky they were not arrested and only had a phone slapped out of their hand in my opinion. It is much cheaper than having to hire a lawyer to get you out of jail.
Yes. She/he was looking for it and we pay for our officers not to fall for it. They should have been arrested and not had the phone slapped out of the hand. May be cheaper and may even be more satisfying, but that is not the job. The job needs to be done right and the message those officers put out into the world, gave credence to claims of protesters. It was the wrong choice all the way around.

The fact that this person had their phone out, to me clearly shows this person was trying to provoke the officers (I think the officers saw this too).
Also the person recording kept saying "it's just a coffee" trying to make it look like they are doing to nothing wrong (even though the area is closed off).

She was in the red zone and unless she could prove she was from Ottawa and had a reason to be there, she was going to be asked to leave. She knew this. She admitted she was not from Ottawa.
She was totally causing shit. Instigating and looking for trouble. However the trouble she should have gotten was arrested and removed from the area.
Cops are trained to be able handle all kinds of instigation. They are suppose to ignore being called an asshole or having a camera in their face. That is the job. Do the job properly.
If I was cop, it would have been much more satisfying to drag her as a to jail, then simply knock a phone out of her hand.
With what was going on and the fact that the protesters were calling any police action a form of brutality, they should have been extra careful and ensure they are following the law to the letter while being filmed.
