wrong...you can't depose a leader with just 10% to 40% you need substantial people power than that. Cuban , Russian and French Revolution will not work on todays climate...
So it was another inept right wing coup attempt like Jan 6.
Just because the extreme right wingers are inept doesn't mean it wasn't a coup attempt.

If Trudeau and the Liberal Party are doing such a monumental terrible job of governing the country, as the Conservatives say they are, then why won't the Conservatives table a non-confidence vote? THEY are the Opposition, for fuck's sake, it's their duty to do that.

But no, they won't do that, because they know they can't do any better, and they know they'll get their asses handed to them for a third straight time.

Bitching, moaning and making noise, it's all the CPC is good for.

It wasn't an attempt, more like venting their disappointment...did they rush the parliament? did they turn violent? Be realistic, not all protests want to depose someone, they might put on signs etc etc but all they wanted is to be heard...way more effective than tweeting "israel is Apartheid"...which is going nowhere..."freedumb convoy" has gained more traction than your cause...lol.

So you agree they need to remove the convoy by force?

If the protests are peaceful and not disrupting the lives of others, then they should be allowed to protest all they want.

But this isn't a protest -- it's an occupation. The instant protestors, be they convoy people or people blockading railways, do not allow others peace and quiet and free movement, it turns from a legal protest to illegal occupation. It's that simple.

Peaceful protests are a protected right; occupying and taking over a piece of land and disrupting the peace is not a legal right.

I agree with a lot of what you say. The right to protest does not include the right to take up residence on public property or the right to break any traffic laws, or to break any constitutional local bylaws (regarding noise, public food preparation, etc.).

However, I think your position goes a little too far in suggesting that Ottawa citizens are entitled to peace and quiet at all times, and unobstructed movement. If the protesters were sleeping in hotel rooms, and parking their vehicles in parking lots, but congregating each day during business hours by the thousands on Parliament Hill and/or public places in its immediate environs, and audibly voicing their grievances to the government, I'm afraid the local residents would just have to put up with it. These Ottawa residents chose to live close to where all such demonstrations are likely to take place. As to their unobstructed movement, many of our rights are "first come first serve". If I want to stand at a particular place in a public park, and someone is already there, that's just my bad luck. They do not have to move because I wish to be in the same place. Likewise with sidewalks. If they are full of citizens using them, and it happens that they don't have the capacity for more people who would like to use them, that's just bad luck.

Disturbing the peace has a very specific definition. It does not prohibit otherwise lawful activity:

Causing disturbance, indecent exhibition, loitering, etc.

  • 175(1) Every one who
    • (a) not being in a dwelling-house, causes a disturbance in or near a public place,
      • (i) by fighting, screaming, shouting, swearing, singing or using insulting or obscene language,
      • (ii) by being drunk, or
      • (iii) by impeding or molesting other persons,
    • (b) openly exposes or exhibits an indecent exhibition in a public place,
    • (c) loiters in a public place and in any way obstructs persons who are in that place, or
    • (d) disturbs the peace and quiet of the occupants of a dwelling-house by discharging firearms or by other disorderly conduct in a public place or who, not being an occupant of a dwelling-house comprised in a particular building or structure, disturbs the peace and quiet of the occupants of a dwelling-house comprised in the building or structure by discharging firearms or by other disorderly conduct in any part of a building or structure to which, at the time of such conduct, the occupants of two or more dwelling-houses comprised in the building or structure have access as of right or by invitation, express or implied,
  • is guilty of an offence punishable on summary conviction.
The description of the offense must also be read subject to the right to freedom of expression under the Charter. The courts have frequently recognized that "shouting" in the context of a political protest at a government building does not constitute a "disturbance" within the meaning of the Criminal Code.

First, I think this protest is not well thought out. Yes, Trudeau's government put in the mandate. But so did the USA. So, regardless if the government didn't have the mandate, this small group of truckers would be suffering the same fate.

Second, I'm sure Harper would have acted similarly to Trudeau. A deadly disease should not be a partisan issue. It has become one because of Trump. That's why you're hearing these protesters echo US protests about freedom and what not. Would Trudeau invoke the Emergencies Act on BLM if they did this? Impossible to tell, but my gut is he would because of what is going on.

Third, I'm curious what you want Trudeau to do? Meet with these people who were seriously calling for the overthrow of our democratically elected officials? Who would he speak with, white supremacists Pat King of the leader of the western separatists party? Should the PM meet with every group that decides to protest on parliament hill? Or, are you saying he should have invoked the emergencies act sooner and got the military involved? It's a serious question because you seem to think Trudeau has command of the police. Is that what you believe? What should he have done? What would any PM have done? Keep in mind, his family caught covid just as this thing started so he had to go into isolation. But even if he didn't....I just don't know what magical powers you think the PM could use to have resolved this earlier? Capitulate to their demands? That doesn't seem like a good idea....

Trudeau is right though, the majority of Canadians do not support this protest. At best, maybe 30%. Majority of Canadians have followed the rules, got their shots and have stayed safe. We've had 35K deaths, which many could have been preventable. But, if you look at the US where they are all over the map in regards to mandates and vaccination levels, they have 925K. The US population is roughly 100X Canada's. So, you can say that roughly we've had almost 1/3 fewer deaths. I mean, imagine if 90K Canadians died. So, what does this tell us? Our system, despite the restrictions, have save thousands of lives. The sad reality is that people who believe a lot of this protester stuff have died or will die because of the virus. And they'll likely bring some of their family or immunocompromised people with them.
I didn't expect Trudeau to do much but he just put gasoline on the fire by insulting the protesters. That's something Trump would do. He could have been a lot more diplomatic. You seem to expect more from Doug Ford than Trudeau on this issue. Why Is that considering the protest is right in Trudeau's front yard? We don't know how Harper would have acted. I seriously doubt he would have had a mandate on truckers. I would never expect Trudeau to meet with these people but he did however stand with the BLM protesters. The only difference here is idealogy. I don't think he should have invoked the act al all. Lots of countries have had anti mandates protests, no one has gone this far. It was purely a political move by him. If the Republicans were in charge in the US they never would have put in a trucker mandate, that's why i don't think it's easy to say Harper would have done it.

They showed up on a weekend when parliament was shut down. Poor planning.
But they also blocked bridges and trade, causing $300 million in losses while demanding the government resign.
They wanted more than to be heard.

Portland....that was an area where a lot of right-wing agitators were caught doing shady shit, including arson (now, I'm not saying all the arson was them, just some of it).
How long did that "Autonomous Zone" thing last?
It feels like the closest parallel.

Again Rich, they could have done it, but most people support the government and the cops and army would have stayed loyal. And the free-dumbos are as unrealistic and disorganized as the January 6 crowd. There is no real plan, aside from parading about like circus clowns with placards, honking their horns.

And when the Bouncy Castle arrived, that was more important than overthrowing the government. Because how often do you get free Bouncy Castle time?!

You mean if JT didn't say mean things about the free-dumbos, they would all have just gone home? Seriously?!

C'mon! They're having a pretty good time. Partying 24/7 with friends. Campfires. Inflated self-importance - "Hey dude, we're making HISTORY here, dude!!!"... And they still expect to get that GSG / GFM $$$$. Beats having a real job any old time!

Remove the trucks by force and let them protest on foot.
Then they'd just be a tiny angry mob of 250 people and nobody would care.
If it's so tiny, what's with the emergency act?

The latest on protests against COVID-19 measures in Ottawa and beyond

Ukraine cyberattack "largest" in country's history, says official

People still participating in the so-called "Freedom Convoy" blockade of downtown Ottawa are being warned by police to "leave the area now" as questions heat up about when police will act to remove the demonstrators who have paralyzed the nation's capital for 20 days.
A protester yells “freedom” towards a person who attempted to stick a paper sign on a truck criticizing the so called “Freedom Convoy,” a protest against COVID-19 measures that has grown into a broader anti-government protest, on its 18th day, in Ottawa, on Monday, Feb. 14, 2022. "You must leave the area now. Anyone blocking streets, or assisting others in the blocking streets, are committing a criminal offence and you may be arrested. You must immediately cease further unlawful activity or you will face charges," reads a notice issued by Ottawa police on Wednesday morning.

"The people of Ottawa are being denied the lawful use, enjoyment and operation of their property and you are causing businesses to close. That is mischief under the Criminal Code."
The federal government invoked the never-before-used Emergencies Act on Monday amid intense frustration and anger among Ottawa residents over police handling of the convoy so far.
Peter Sloly resigned as chief of the Ottawa Police Service on Tuesday, and federal officials have for days offered increasingly clear rhetoric that the blockades are now "illegal," and that police must end them.
Yet demonstrators have remained defiant in the face of the Emergencies Act, with hundreds still parked in blockades along residential streets of downtown Ottawa and vowing to remain.

Ottawa convoy supporters dismiss authority of Emergencies Act, no plans to leave
The convoy organizers originally said they wanted to force elected officials out and force an end to all public health measures in place to limit the spread of COVID-19, most of which are under provincial -- not federal -- jurisdiction.
Organizers later removed references to calls to remove elected officials from their websites, and have since claimed they never called for such action.
Some of the convoy organizers have ties to white nationalism and histories of racist rhetoric.

In the order invoking the Emergencies Act, the federal government explicitly warned about fears of "serious violence" from blockade participants motivated by political or ideological goals.
While the order did not use the word "terrorism," that language mirrors the Criminal Code definition of terrorist activity, and convoy organizers removed a journalist from a press conference this week for asking whether they are aware of any firearms among participants.
