Yes, I was referring to Jacob, grandson of Abraham. His other name is Israel. He had thirteen sons, twelve of which founded the tribes, and Joseph, who interpreted dreams correctly and became the major advisor of the Pharaoh of Egypt. It sounds like the Mormons invented some founders for the Nephites, but gave them names associated with the founders of Judaism. They even have their own salt lake, just like God's 'other' chosen people.
Yeah, Joseph Smith plagiarized quite a bit. The parts that he didn't are historically inaccurate.

I find it hard to believe that intelligent, educated people actually believe that any of that book is true. I like to read about religions, but I have no interest in becoming a member of any of them. An individual can have a personal moral code without having to be affiliated with an established Faith.

I consider myself to be one of the few Jokerians: We believe that God puts other people on the Earth to provide us with a source of amusement, and our Sacred sacrament is Schadenfreude. We have no rules, no required contributions, no hierarchy, and meetings are held infrequently at ad hoc times, usually with the consumption of alcohol and cannabis, and we generally exchange gifts of rare but inexpensive items that would personally appeal to one of the other members. Sometimes we collectively consume the contents of a can of octopus; one of us bought it back in the day when doing grocery shopping while baked.

Read my post. Her opinions were unpopular with others at the venue she attended and she was shouted down. That was not the university arresting her or silencing her. That was the other attendees at the event.

😆 I dare anyone to attend a religious based school in the Islamic country or even an orthodox yeshiva while proclaiming openly unorthodox sexual norms. We used to have this understanding that if one couldn't or wouldn't comply with the rules, one would attend a secular institution. Is this really so difficult in 2022?
The difference here is that the school's policies are backed up by actual police IN THE US. Yes, kids at a madrassa in Saudi Arabia face the same thing but that's hardly a standard to aim for.

BYU University has values that it adheres to. So does any other University. They have the right to enforce those values. Attendance at BYU is voluntary.
Except in Canada, it would infringe provincial Human Rights Codes - even as a private, non state funded institution. The anti LGBTQ stance alone would get it closed down or sued into rubble within a few years.

BYU Campus police provide personal info to church officials, they are almost all Mormon themselves. I don't get how they are able to enforce the honor code in 2022.

I find it amazing all the other right wingers that back this type of religious fascism.

The LDS Church shouldn't eligible for tax exempt status, and their police unit should be disbanded if they are going to behave like this.

This is the same school who has had president's that were opposed to interracial marriages (the current church president once was), said the civil rights movement were communist, and were opposed to black people being part of the school student council. Many universities refused play them in sports as a result, not to mention that their athletes were also known racists.

As an Exmormon, who knows a lot of Mormons/Exmormons, many people are trapped in the church and do not voluntarily attend. Especially, the youth.

I guess God changed his mind on those subjects; the President only follows His orders. And if you believe that...

Looking at the list of what BYU students are not allowed to do, (see post #2 of this thread), their idea of Heaven would be considered Hell by many of the members of THIS board, as well as a very large percentage of everyone else.

There was a man whose only goal in life was to serve God for all eternity. When the man died, he found himself standing on a cloud. A figure approached him, increasing in size as He got closer. Finally, God, ten times the size of the man, stood in front of the man and said "Your seat is number 15, row 398, section 1,094. Grab your oar, my boat leaves in five minutes".

What they say now is that these prophets were speaking as men, as opposed to of God.

They use to ask 12 year olds if they masturbated in temple worthiness interviews. I was asked that by an angry bishop. Mike Wallace asked Gordon B. Hinckley if he thought that was appropriate, and the interview format suddenly became more vague.

You were allowed to have multiple wives and your own planet once upon a time, in Heaven. So it's not just Muslims who crave all the virgins in the afterlife. I think they may have changed the doctrine now.

So if they pull ancient time theocratic control in schools it's OK for BYU to do the same? They set our standards for us?

Typical jc mindset.

You should know by now that there is no low that is low enough for any rightie to stoop to, to tow the party line. They have zero integrity and zero shame.

They are cultists with no will of their own. When did we, as a group, become to stooooopid?

Free speech is the most important thing, except if people's parents send them to BYU.
Or they work for the CBC.

Or any Canadian University.
