Regardless of the Leafs, the vaunted Canadiens will not have won a cup in 28 years. That is shameful for them. What is the longest that they've gone between cups?

29 years now. LOL!
Don't look now but those hapless Maple Leafs are finally number one in something. If 29 years is "shameful" - what is 19,786 days and climbing (or 54 years and counting) for Toronto??

How about a record of complete and abject futility unlikely to ever be broken !!!

LOL - indeed

Forget the Leafs. They are sad sack as far as recent cups. Is that who you're comparing Montreal to?

My point is that the only way that one can put a positive spin on the Habs last 30 years, you have to compare them to the lowly Leafs. That is about as low of a bar as one can set. Otherwise, Montreal is pathetic.

I seem to recall that in 1997, the Leafs were getting mocked like crazy for going 30 years without. Well, that's where Montreal is now. They are just as mock worthy now as the Leafs were back then. 30 years is 30 years. The only difference is that Montreal is supposed to be synonymous with "success". They are supposed to be a "model franchise" for winning. darts has told us that they have the "Montreal system". Well, they've sucked the big one for almost 30 years. Nothing to be proud of and nothing to gloat about.

It seems to me that Montreal no longer deserves to be placed on that pedestal.

BTW, did anybody answer my question: What is the longest that Montreal has gone without a cup? Also, for comparison what is their 2nd longest drought?

I looked it up.

Surprise, surprise. Montreal is currently in their longest drought of no cups, 29 years and counting.. And their 2nd longest was only 12 years, from 1932-1943. They are obliterating their previous futility record.

As I said, regardless of what the Leafs drought is, Montreal fans have no reason to gloat.

(I'd better hope that they don't win 4 in a row.🤨😟)

The only team that I know of that is named for a body of water. (Along with the Bucs and (Devil) Rays.)
Well, the Lakers...but they brought that with them from Minnesota.

The Leafs are the only team to come back down 3-0 to win the Stanley Cup. Probably will stay that way.

I googled the "Montreal system" and all I could find was:
metro
transit
school
train
tunnel
transportation
bus
sewer
rail
Did somebody make up this "Montreal system" as it pertains to the Habs?

First time that I heard it mentioned was by darts. I've asked him what it is but he's never answered. My takeaway is that he was BSing. There is no system.

What system could there be in common that was employed by both the powerhouse teams of the late 70's and the mediocre team of '93 that only won because of Pat Roy? Those teams had nothing in common in terms of how they played the game.

Darts didn't answer a reasonable question?
I, for one, am shocked.

As as lifelong Hab's fan I agree 100% that going 29 years between Stanley Cup wins is not anything to be proud of as a franchise. Montreal has made many mistakes since the glory years of the six Cup wins in the1970's, and the one-off wins in 1986 and 1993. Bad trades, poor draft choices, bad coaching, at times indifferent ownership - have resulted in years of not particularly impressive seasons.

But you are 100% wrong about Hab's fans not having a reason to gloat as anytime the Habs beat the Maple Leafs in the playoffs it is cause for celebration. (Especially if they go on to make it to the Cup final) And when it happens against a Leaf's team that was supposed to win easily in 4 straight - well that is just "priceless"

And as far as the Hab's winning four in a row - hell if a Toronto Maple Leaf's team was the last to accomplish that feat how hard can it really be???

For sure, it is always OK to gloat after a series win. I was referring to Montreal fans gloating about the Leafs not winning the cup in 53 years. A franchise renowned for winning, that has now gone almost 30 years without winning, as you said, has no reason to gloat about another team's drought.

Forget about not replying to me or even another of the "usual suspects", he ducks/turtles/hides/slinks away whenever anybody challenges a post of his. And as we all know, sometimes he just deletes entire threads instead of standing up for himself.

I answer question from members who actually understand the answers.

Hey look what I found. And the answer is no, they didn't make the playoffs that year.

They only hire French-speaking GMs and head coaches. I think that's it. I think I nailed it. That's the Montreal system.

Montreal has now won 11 playoff series since 2004. Toronto has won none. Is that recent enough for you?

Montreal has now went 0 years since reaching the final. Toronto has went 54 years. Is that recent?

It’s not all about winning the cup. Although it is a big part of it. But Toronto’s run since 2004 is nearly historic.

I always respect your opinions and posts maurice, but again, if a Montreal fan has to resort to comparing their team to the Leafs it's scraping the bottom of the playoff barrel. Nobody is trying to defend the Leafs' record compared to Montreal's. There is no discussion to be had, so I don't understand having to even bring up the Leafs. I have consistently only discussed Montreal's performance in the last 30 years compared to Montreal's overall reputation/legacy. No other NHL teams need to be discussed. Comparing Montreal to Toronto is basically an admission of Montreal's futility.

And I will disagree with your assessment of championships. Yankees, Celtics, Lakers status as iconic franchises are defined by their strings of championships, not moral victories of good runs but coming up short. Montreal fans consider their team to be as iconic as those franchises and should be held to the same standard. None of those teams have come close to Montreal's current stretch of seasons without a championship. For a team hailed as the model of NHL success, winning the cup isn't everything, it's the only thing. (Tip of the hat to Vince.)

Zero cups since 1994 is totally contrary to the Montreal legacy and is the only point that I have tried to make. (Again, I'd better hope the Habs don't win the next 4.🤯😧)

I will make one prediction: I think the Leafs will win a cup before Montreal.
