Most players would have had their stick high or been in motion, Evans didn’t protect himself very well.
The key point for the 4 games suspensions happens about 20-30 feet before the net. As I wrote before you clearly see Scheifele slow down a bit then going back at it. Timing himself perfectly for the hit. At that point that's all he wanted. I would have given him suspension for the rest of the playoff.

NHL video explaining reason for suspension. "
"Scheifele chooses to charge into a vulnerable opponent with a high, predatory hit with intent to cause an injury" and "there was significant contact to the head"

Short summary it was a dirty cheap head shot hit on a player who was in no position to defend himself and Scheiflele went out of his way to make the hit with no intent to try and prevent a goal as the puck was already clearly in the net before the hit.

I don’t think he thought about hitting him until it was gift wrapped in front of him...

But he must have known all along that the hit was a possibility. Within 10 feet he clearly targeted the head with no intention of playing the puck.

I don't think so...he went down to defend, if the puck had squirted lose he would have took possession of the puck, if Evans was moving it would have been more difficult to hit him...Evans stopped and made the hit easy for Scheifele...I don't think he targeted the head...

If you watch this clip and pause it right at the 1:06 mark, Scheifele has his head up, looking at Evans. He never looks at where the puck is. That's what it looks like to me.

He'll be back for game 6 just in time for Weber to get a piece of him.
Everybody on the habs will be happy to give him a shot
During the regular season, Miller blindsided Amalia. During the warm-up in the next game, Edmundson challenged Miller to a fight.

Does anyone think Scheifele is man enough to fight?

Correction: It was Myers and not Miller.

He was going for the hit, he’s allowed to hit, and was trying to stop him from cutting out in front.

At 6'3" and somewhere in the neighborhood of 220lbs, I'm pretty sure he can take care of himself. He's not known as a fighter, but he won't be a pushover for anyone that takes him on either.

Yes, a player is allow to hit but it has to be within the rules (no charging, no boarding, etc.). One of the talking heads on TV said that only suspensions exceeding 5 games in the playoffs are appealable. Anyway, Scheifele announced to-day that he won't appeal.

Damien Cox on the Scheifele suspension:

Incidents like Mark Scheifele’s hit on Jake Evans will continue to happen because NHL treats the safety of its players as secondary | The Star

But this goes well beyond Parros and his questionable judgment. It has to do with the way in which this league and the hockey industry have long made the victim’s needs and interests secondary to that of the perpetrator. Indeed, starting with Game 2 on Friday night, you can bet Evans’ health will become a secondary matter to “how will Winnipeg adjust without Mark Scheifele?”

Kadri, now a member of the Colorado Avalanche, was suspended eight games for a dangerous hit on Justin Faulk of the St. Louis Blues. He has four games left to serve and will either be back for their second-round series against the Vegas Golden Knights or next, if the Avalanche move on.

And Faulk? The Blues have been eliminated. Do you ever hear of him, or how he’s recovering? Is it ever mentioned on “Hockey Night in Canada”? The players union, you’ll recall, appealed Kadri’s suspension. It wanted the ban decreased. Faulk was treated as if his interests barely mattered.

Interesting article. Whatever happened to the kinder, gentler NHL where smaller "skilled" players are allowed to excel?

For example, the Leafs drafted 6 (out of 12) players in 2019 none of whom taller than 5'11".
"No surprise, the prevailing theme to Kyle Dubas’ draft over the 12 selections was one of skill and hockey sense. The Leafs selected six players (three forwards, three defensemen) between 5’9-5’11 in the 2019 draft, with those aforementioned traits the common thread among them; this year, excluding their goalie pick, they drafted 11 players between 5’9 and 6’1, with a heavy European ti"

I don't always agree with Cox, but "he hit the nail on the head" with this one. Pun intended.

I don't think that it really has to do with size. Eric Lindros was a beast, but he got crumpled by Stevens and was never the same afterwards.

The health of all players, regardless of size, needs to be respected and the league and at least equally the NHLPA needs to respect that. Why does the PA always, always, always side with the perpetrator. Whenever they appeal it is always to reduce the sentence. They never consider what has happened to the the guy who got hurt. Is the victim not also considered an equal member of the PA? The fact that they routinely favour the hitter over the hittee, both NHLPA members, is truly mind boggling. It's like the NHLPA as a whole got their bell rung too many times.

There should be a rule implemented whereby when one player injures another 'deliberately' (as determined by an independent arbitor) and in a manner/fashion that causes serious injury, that player automatically forfeits a percentage of his salary directly to the player he injured. The percentage should be high enough that the offending player really feels it, beyond any fines/suspensions the league or any member team might apply.
