I haven’t watched the league closely enough the last few years. Does Mark Scheifele always play like this?

And this is prior to the cheap shot. he was so agitated, irritated, angry.. all game. And not really sure what triggered this. It was as if the Habs had gang banged his girlfriend/wife on the day off before the game.

I did not watch many Jets games this year - but over his career Scheifele does not have a reputation for cheap shots or dirty hits that I know of - he is a skilled player.

But you are right that he was agitated all game and I don't remember any play that triggered that behavior. But that hit was brutal and he deserves a suspension. His own coach could not offer any real justification for the hit in the post game press interview and really did not want to answer questions about it.

Stick was down, elbow was down, initial contact was shoulder on chest, was away from the boards, didn't run or his skates didn't leave the ice...although he did hit him at full speed.

It was a tough hit, I don't see a lot wrong with it...
The puck was in the net when he made contact.

A little late sure, Jake Evans should have protected himself...you think Brad Marchand would have gotten hit like that?

Watched it again, the puck might not have been in the net...it was in the process of going in...it was close, play was still live.

...late....okay, we are agreed on that.

How should Evans have protected himself?
The puck is in the net, play is over.
Was Scheifele performing an homage to Dale Hunter?
*not nearly as late as Hunter's hit was*

I'm not sure I understand the Marchand question?

Rule 42
"Charging is a penalty in ice hockey. Rule 42 of the NHL rulebook dictates that charging "shall mean the actions of a player or goalkeeper who, as a result of distance traveled, shall violently check an opponent in any manner. A 'charge' may be the result of a check into the boards, into the goal frame or in open ice."[1] The infraction may warrant any severity of penalty or combination of penalties as the officials deem fit, including a major plus a game misconduct, or suspension if the infraction results in injury to the opposing player."

Marchand would have either went low or had his stick high...I don't think it was even that late.

Based on that, he'll probably get suspended.

But watch the replay again. From 20 feet away it's obvious that Scheifele is only focusing on hitting. He did not even tried to block the puck. No does not care the game is over so he went for the crazy hit. Yes he made contact after the puck was in the net but he could have tried to prevent it from going in. Watch it again.

If Evans had curled and went out the other side of the net, he would have still scored and avoided the hit.

Perhaps if Evans didn't score and went into the corner with the puck to kill time, he would have avoided getting nailed 2 Jets would have pinned him into the boards as they tried to dig the puck lose.

That's another way...but he's gotta go for the goal to put the game on ice.

That's the only way your instinct will allow you to respond.
In real time everything happened so fast. If it was me and if there was time, I would have and did stick out my stick when I played and the "bat shot out of hell" would have had to eat wood before getting to me.

100% Scheifele is only focused on hitting & hurting Evans.
That's the point, the play is over.
It was a malicious, dirty play with but one intent.

I think we're on the same side on this issue.

Most players would have had their stick high or been in motion, Evans didn’t protect himself very well.
