We keep hearing vaccines work etc etc
So why is death toll not showing a drastic drop? All these old people are vaccinated right? Every month its always another 200 for our stats.
Even going back to last year
And percentage of fatalities changes a bit up and down but always close to 22% chance of death, even with vaccines
We vaccinated the old people first because they're most likely to die. But the truth is that people in their 80's are not the ones selling you weed and booze, or delivering your parcels and groceries or making your take out food. They're not the ones marching like fascist in the streets in the hundreds, completely refusing to protect either themselves or others. They're not the ones taking 3 busses packed to the gills home from work in the middle of the night. They're not the ones throwing massive raves in the middle of a state of emergency and trashing public places.
I know we won't vaccinate the idiots, but we've just now started vaccinating the ones that deal with them most of the time. Once the people that have to be out there while we're all at home get vaccinated, things should start to really change, as we'll have protected the ones that are most likely to both get it and spread it.
Frankly, targeting the people more likely to get or spread the virus first would probably have had a greater impact. You could've still done 80 + adults and health care workers first. Just put essential workers third.
Also, vaccines are a mitigation tool. They're not exactly an instant cure. Right now, they're keeping the hospitals from getting overwhelmed and eventually will start to affect the spread of the virus. In fact, they're already starting to do so.
Unfortunately, it takes a while to eradicate a disease. At least we have vaccines. Making them used to take years, sometimes a decade. We got it done in about 1 year. Maybe things could have been worse?
Either way, I think we can all agree, we all want this shit to end.
