Whatever happened to John J Sykes, in the 80's he was considered the Irish Eddie Van Halen. He left Thin Lizzy to make Whitesnake 87...after that I have no idea.

He formed Blue Murder and they released their great self-titled debut album in 1989 to moderate success.
Since then success has eluded him. The follow up BM album Nothing But Trouble in 1993 was good but flopped, as did his subsequent solo albums. I think he still records and tours as a solo act, mostly in Europe.
I think he is English not Irish. You may be confusing him with his Whitesnake replacement, Vivian Campbell (ex Dio now with Def Leppard ).

I can't consider them to be Thin Lizzy without Phil Lynott. If there's personnel change in an active band, it can be different, but Sykes was part of a version of Lizzy formed more than ten years after Phil pushed up his first daisy.

Phil Lynott was still alive and well when Thunder and Lightning (with John Sykes) came out, Lynott died 86.
Sykes also plays lead guitar on the US version of Whitesnake 's Slide It In album. Great guitarist and songwriter. Very underrated. He also sings lead on the Blue Murder albums. He co-wrote most of the songs on Whitesnake 87, including Still of the Night and Is this Love.
Btw he also released a live album Screaming Blue Murder that has a great version of Cold Sweat.
