Fatal e-scooter accident

I was driving in my car a few months ago when an e-scooter flew by me.
I was doing about 40kmh, I estimate the scooter was doing at least 60 clicks.
Kid had no helmet on.

I told my SO at the time one of these days someone is going to die on one of these scooters.
Sure enough, it has happened. 20-year old kid is now dead.
He did wear a helmet but it looks like it may have come off.

Saw someone on an e-scooter last year fly through a red and get hit by an SUV. Rider ended up on top of the hood of the car and I think was okay? I didn't stick around that long so I'm not 100% sure.

Reuters (7/20) “Ireland will raise the minimum age for the use of electric scooters to 18 from 16, and require riders to be licensed and wear helmets, the government said on Monday, although ‌it stopped short of a total ban Prime Minister Micheal Martin had said he was leaning towards.”

Come to Bramalea sometime, and watched the idiots here. 1st driving in the middle-of-the-road yes in the middle making cars go around. 2nd I find it funny that if you drive a motorcycle you have to have a helmet but these idiots most of home have airbags you know the ones I’m talking about. 3rd it’s a tossup between weaving through the hash marks on the road, the one that divides the road into 2 lanes or is it that they have 2 people on 1 of these scooters. I’m getting tired of a certain counsel woman in Brampton blaming cars for all the accidents I like to see, if 1 of these scooters are involved to sue the hit right out of phone let’s see damage to my car mental anguish seeing him fly off the hood etc. etc. For me I love to see fatalities and I’ve seen a few, and as sick as it sounds, I enjoy the fact that it takes one idiot off the planet. Oh, and on another venue sidewalks now if the police deemed these at a motorized vehicle can I drive my car on the sidewalk? I had one idiot racing down the sidewalk while I was taking my dog for a walk. He made contact with my right arm took him clean off his scooter yeah, he was a little upset and if he wanted to have a go let’s do so now. Yes, I pedal my bike on the sidewalk I know I shouldn’t but I’m not going to take a chance on the roads in Brampton but what I do, if I see a pedestrian I drive off the sidewalk, how did they say it in red October “give this pedestrian a wide berth”. Here’s a thought in bloody old England, if the police catch you with a motorized scooter modified, they simply charge you and take the scooter away from you to become a beer can or what ever it is gone. It’s the same thing like texting or phoning in your car, give you a ticket kiss your phone goodbye. You would still be liable for the contract and if it’s a business phone explain that to your boss!

I haven't been on one but I suspect they aren't capable of stopping quickly. So I asked AI. Answer is yes it can stop quickly. From 15 mph in about 10 to 15 feet. That doesn't sound quick to me. If you're trying to avoid something coming in your way that's still 15 feet of distance potentially if not more if one is going even faster than 15 mph.

Definitely not safer for the pedestrians
Maybe not for the pedestrians, but if I were to drive an e-scooter I would feel a helluva lot safer on a sidewalk than I would on a street or a bike lane

its got more manoeuvrability though which helps in avoiding collisions despite the 10-15 feet stop time unless youre a really bad driver

Of course you would feel safer on the sidewalk but it would be at the expense of everyone else’s safety.

Doesnt seem to be a problem in many Florida cities: https://topriding.com/en-ca/blogs/news/florida-electric-scooter-laws

Of course you will get some pedestrian accidents, but thats the same whether its on a sidewalk, bike lane, or regular crosswalk
According to that article some cities don’t allow scooters on sidewalks.
The cities that do have a speed limit of 15mph.
Most riders will exceed it.
That article doesn’t mention whether it’s a problem or not.

Anyone going over 15 mph should have their e-scooter confiscated.
Similar if you are caught stunt driving and you get your car confiscated for a couple of weeks.
Also make the owner of the e-scooter pay storage fees for those 2 weeks.
And if they don't pay they don't get their scooter back

In the spirit of the above:

Anyone operating a motor vehicle at a speed exceeding the posted limit should have their vehicle confiscated.

I'm not shitting on the 20 year old's death but these guys are flying and think they can get away with shit. Or maybe the driver did something stupid and wasn't looking.

they're also not paying attention at all, you have to watch things a lot more now. Even now when I'm turning in my car, I'm double and triple checking for scooters because those guys don't pay attention themselves at times.
Scooter delivery guys also do some of the wildest shit on the roads. I make sure they hear what they're doing is wrong. I ask them if they're "licensed" and once they hear that, they ride off.

That poor kid though 20 years old.

Another fatal accident yesterday. Rider was not wearing a helmet

Let's be honest when we were teenagers a lot of us didn't care to wear helmets while riding our bike, this is the 2.0 version of this. Except we weren't flying at 25+mph on the roads standing, twisting a throttle.
Feel bad for the parents.

I have no sympathy for the clowns that drive around the streets like they own it and are invincible. Why is it we have it that when you go on a construction site you must have a hard hat, safety glasses, and steel toed boots? But these guys have no helmets, no insurance and probably no paperwork to identify themselves if a police question them. All I can say is he used his head

Yea precisely helmets are great and all but it's a lot different when riding a bike versus a scooter going at speeds like you mentioned

i think a lot of the reason for that might be that there just wasn't as many people in canada back then and generally the drivers were also not as bad as they are today because good lord some of them are so bad at driving
