Fatal e-scooter accident

I was driving in my car a few months ago when an e-scooter flew by me.
I was doing about 40kmh, I estimate the scooter was doing at least 60 clicks.
Kid had no helmet on.

I told my SO at the time one of these days someone is going to die on one of these scooters.
Sure enough, it has happened. 20-year old kid is now dead.
He did wear a helmet but it looks like it may have come off.

Bicycle lanes, very stupid.
MTO regulations? - Left work early this week , scooter rider had no light for me to see him. Same with Bicycles. I have reflectors on my bicycle.

Aparently in this fatality the car was turning left into a plaza near the intersection and that is how scooter was struck.
I have not heard if the scooter had lights, or what if any factor speed may have been a factor, and if scooter driver was wearing any hi viz clothing.
The car windshiled was stove in withe the shape of a torso and scooter.

What I find so stupid is that these e-scooters are not allowed on sidewalks.

In Fort Lauderdale, Florida you're allowed to drive an e-scooter on the sidewalk because it's much safer

I almost ran over a guy last week. I'm on a residential street and this guy pops out of an alley way onto the street with no lights on at 11pm. We were both lucky I had enough distance between us.

And I have an issue with grown men out here riding around on scooters too. At a certain age it looks pathetic, just please stop.

In Fort Lauderdale, Florida you're allowed to drive an e-scooter on the sidewalk because it's much safer

The same idiots will drive 60 on a sidewalk.

I e-bike, with the 32 km inhibitor. And at those speeds it can be difficult to corner, stop and avoid things. At the speeds those scooters go, with those tiny tires? Forget it. Momentum will fuck the rider up.

Tons of accidents happening with them. They need to Crack down.

No lights, dressed dark, and they can't be bothered to brake. I see it all the time with them. Worst riders out there. I do get it. Live in a condo downtown, no car or parking available. Cost savings are big. My e-bike has paid itself off now.

These bloody things have made bicycle lanes unusable for ordinary, pedal bicycles. Just try riding along the Danforth bike land and dodging food delivery scooters, and you'll see what I mean. If Ontario is going to permit these idiot devices at all, then they should be on the roads. They are, after all, motorized vehicles.

I was hanging a right off Yonge at Merton a few nights ago, there's a bike lane there, i always look to see before turning. it's nighttime, very dark, I see nothing so i initiate the turn only to miss a scooter by inches. The food delivery bike was going about 40k with no lights, no reflector, nothing. I could have killed the guy.
Would it have been my fault? what if he just hit my car and was fine, who's insurance gets to cover the damages? would uber or skip the dishes cover it?

Couple of things:

In Ontario if a e-bike or scooter can go above 32 km/h (might be 34), they are considered a motor vehicle requiring a license, insurance and the driver to be on the road. If you (or your kid) rode something like that and hit/injured someone, you would face a world of legal trouble, and the injured party would be able to directly sue you for virtually everything you own.

We've all seen kids zipping down the street on these damn things, no helmet on. ERs are already filled with injuries, some have led to catastrophic injuries. And, the reality is these damn things are not safe. I saw on social media a woman who says she was zipping along and his a rut in the road and went ass over heels, but thankfully was wearing a helmet. The result: she still broke her collar bone and shoulder, suffered a serious concussion, blew her fucking ear drum out and is now 80% deaf in one ear.

I don't know what the solution is, there are so many of these devices on the road, but idiots refuse to treat them with respect. And I don't just mean kids. We've all likely seen adults weaving through traffic on these devices. I honestly don't know why there isn't a bigger crackdown on this shit.

Vehicle owners (cars, motorcycle, etc.) must have ownership documentation, a licence, insurance and a helmet for motorcycles. All are required regardless of the road used and the speed limit. None of these are required for e-scooters.

I have seen people, including young teenagers, on e-scooters travel on city roads and sidewalks going substantially faster than other road users even with little traffic.

I’m not one for more government intrusion into our lives, but these things should be regulated. As a previous poster said “They are, after all, motorized vehicles.”

Until there's some accountability, this will continue. You think Danforth is bad, try Spadina! The problem is no-one is addressing it. We allowed bicycles on our roads for decades which was fine when there weren't as many cars or bikes. (we all remember bike couriers back in the 80s and 90s right?) Now we have 10x as many cars and a plethora of electric "scooters / bikes / etc" as well as the annoying fucks in Spandex. (sorry... I hate the spandex clad fucks... my problem) So we built bike lanes. An e-bike that's a big as a motorcycle has no business being in the bike lane, and if it can't keep up with traffic has no business being on roads. So make them smaller or make them faster. If you make them faster: license / insurance / helmet laws apply. E-scooters? Stick to skate parks or accept more deaths.

There are too many fucking morons driving ANYTHING to not be more militant about the rules.
Seriously... when was the last time you saw a cop out pulling people over?!

Example: saw a Vespa on Richmond last week weave between the driving lanes and then bike lanes. But I'm supposed to feel sorry for him if he gets killed?

Safer? Not for the pedestrians. Especially for those walking their tiny little dogs or even toddlers.
I've seen them zipping around quick on sidewalks.

In addition to these electric scooters, I have seen a group of teens (about 10) riding electric dirt bikes along Bloor St west. The speed limit on this stretch is 40 kmph so some cars might be driving closer to 50. These dirt bike riders are passing cars on both the left and right of the car on a one lane road (the kids are fortunately not in the separated bike lane or they would surely crash into a cyclist on the off chance there is on there).

None of these kids have helmets, there are no lights on the bikes and the scariest part is a few of them are riding for several hundred meters performing a wheelie. My SO and I have seen this about a dozen times now and we fear it is only a matter of time before one of these kids gets seriously hurt.

No the collision would not be your fault. However you would still have to live with the thought of killing/injuring someone badly, you don't need that misery.
