Keep in mind that it really hasn't been that long since they started using 2 refs. So relatively speaking, I don't think that the job is really that much tougher from what it used to be with just 1 ref responsible for the whole ice.
They have a mandate to stop all the obstruction, anytime some one falls someone is held accountable, they don't just let them play they look for penalties, there are a lot more chintzy penalties now...in times gone by, there was only a few players known for diving now it's everybody doing it, and they do it because they have a good chance of drawing a penalty.

It's so hard to referee...the game is moving so fast and even the small players look big, when you're closer to ice level the game looks so much different than it does on TV.
I was referring to this quote as a generalization of the degree of difficulty of refereeing currently and not any one particular aspect of that job as you did in the post above it.

Leafs win 2-1 over the Jets in a shootout. The move by Spezza could almost be illegal like he waited way too long before putting the puck in the net.

there's no shot clock as long as he doesn't stop and he clearly didn't stop so no it's not almost illegal.
Did the goalie go into a rage? No, he clearly knew he got beat by a good move.
A lesser player would have shot sooner and into the pads.
Quite frankly he almost did as it bounced off the skates.

Jack Campbell is unbeaten 8-0. I don’t think there’s any doubt that he’s the real deal, at least in the regular season. The only question is can he stay healthy?

The analytics don’t put a lot of weight on point shots but I think that’s what missing in the Leafs’ power play. Without the threat of an accurate and power point shots it makes it easier for the penalty killers to just concentrate on and crowd the down low areas. A tip in from a point shot should be alternative in the pp playbook in addition to the tic tac toe plays. Simmonds net front presence is useless without shots on net from the point men.

The Leafs PP is too predictable. They need to mix it up.

Can we start planning the Jack Campbell statue on legends row?

Shootout rule is that the puck can’t stop or move backwards. Spezza never stopped ... going slow is not illegal

One good way to mix it up would be to set up a point shot for tip in or rebound. It seems to me that the Leafs are always trying to force play from the sides on their pp setup. When the point men get the puck, they don’t shoot even when they are open to do so. Probably it’s because neither Rielly or Marner who usually play the points has a power shot. Reilly’s decision making has been questionable from my point of view. Holl probably has the best point shot among all Leafs d men, maybe they should try him instead of Rielly on the first unit.

Jack Campbell is 1 win away from tying Felix Potvin for 9 straight wins as a Leaf but it may not count as Campbell was injured.

That was quite a hard-on and over the top lovefest Duffy had for Hyman on last night’s broadcast.
Jeez, we know okay, but give it a rest honey.

Holy shit, never would I have imagined that Zach Hyman & Canadian Olympic Team would ever be mentioned in the same breath.

He's the modern day Rob Zamuner. Canada has a history of selecting one player of this ilk. Mike Peca was another.

Why would an injury affect pursuit of that record?

With Hutch in net Leafs will need to score some PP goals.

NHL rules. They mentioned that Matthews would not equal 50 goals in 50 games (this season) because he missed games due to injury. I wonder if they apply that rule to Jack Campbell?
