Now Matthews is out injured.
Who’s next?
Probably from that crosscheck he took in front of the net. He was slow getting up. I hope the others step up and crush the Oilers tonight.

The Leafs are 20-12-2 without Matthews in the lineup since his NHL career began.
Injuries happen. This is not skyfall.
If they were to lose another top forward then that would be a problem.
If they were to lose either Rielly or Muzzin or worse both then that would be a problem.
Or if one of the goalies gets injured and Hutch has to play some games that would also be a problem.
When they were without Tavares and Hyman to start last year they had problems.
But Matthew injured has never been a problem ... yet
They even had more difficulty when Marner was injured rather than Matthews.
They don't have the same forward depth as previous years though.
Less Kapanen and Johnsson and more Veseys.

Matthews role is a bit different now though than in previous years and he is playing more minutes.
He's now relied on to match top lines of other teams.
Use to be Tavares as Matthews was developing.
They may need to reunite Tavares/Marner/Hyman for that until Matthews gets back.

Upper body soreness is the reason given for being out tonight.

I can't believe Nylander. Instead of digging in the corner he's floating in the slot dishing off a perfect pass for a can't miss goal by Vesey. What was he thinking?

Leafs up 2-1 about half way through. Good paced game tonight.

Much as I defend Willy, he had both very good and very bad - as in very, very, very bad!!!! - moments tonight.

Maybe two assists on the 1st 3 goals is adequate compensation. Players have strengths and weaknesses and hopefully the former is more of a factor than the latter.

A typical kind of Willy’s game, influential and dangerous on both ends of the ice. In this one game the team won and he made his contributions. In the playoffs though, against better teams with better defence and goaltending, his offensive brilliance will be neutralized but his defensive lapses will lead to even more goals against.

Mitch Marner 6 games played and 4 goals. Oh, and I know assists don't count but he has 4 of those as well.

Mitch Marner is leading the league in points tied with Mark Stone of Vegas but Mitch has more goals

not always sure...
Mitch Marner 4 goals all at even strength. John Tavares 4 goals all on the PP. Both leading the league in those categories standing alone.
Fully one half of Marner’s goals this year have been in an empty net so you could say they were short handed, kind of.

He’s probably leading the league in goals scored from the centre red line.

It's a testament to Mitch that the coach relies heavily on him to stop the opposition's best players and to put a dagger in with the empty net.

Campbell plays great. Leafs finally found a capable backup since letting MacIlhinney go.

Can a player who leads the league in scoring be classified as over-rated?
Only if you're using the "he's small so he sucks" rating method I suppose.

Campbell was hurt late in today's game.
If it's just a bruise, something minor, Andersen will be starting the next couple games anyway.
If it's much more than that, we'll see Michael Hutchinson in a backup role.
