That's actually funny, and 180 degrees to reality. In truth, the responses I get are exactly what I expect. So, the more appropriate maxim is "if it ain't broke, don't fix it".
Let me introduce you to a subtle thought. Debates and arguments never accomplish anything during the heat of battle. However, the points that are made seat themselves into the minds of the debaters, and more importantly, into the minds of their broader audience, over the long term. As a result, good points win over that longer term. The personalities and emotion attached to the debate fade. However, people who hold political power in the short term based on bad ideas NEVER surrender it lightly, so much carnage happens while they struggle to hold on to that power.
