That's what makes him overrated...Viktor Tikhonov praises him and it goes undisputed...Scotty Bowman coached Gainey in Montreal, if Bowman wasn't the coach of the Canadian team Gainey probably wouldn't have been on the team.I guess that famous Russian coach was a fool for saying Gainey was the best player he'd seen....LOL. Both Gainey and Carbonneau were tireless defenders who left it all on the ice. Any team would have coveted them, including the Laffs.
People bring that up...c'mon, Bob Gainey-"Best player in the World", hardly...I don't think that Russian coach seen the players on that 1976 Canada Cup play often, Bobby Orr, Bobby Hull, Denis Potvin, Gil Perreault, Darryl Sittler, Guy Lafleur, Marcel Dionne, etc etc the list goes on...they didn't name an award for those guys to win.
Tireless workers shouldn't get you in the Hall of Fame, 3rd liners were what they were...those guys were never even in the top 4-5 players on their teams.
