As the Stanley Cup Final draws to a close, it's time to look forward to the 2020-21 NHL season, whenever it may start!

It's almost October, which means that training camps are ending.

In the Before Times, you'd be correct.

The NHL Entry Draft is coming up shortly, October 6 for Round 1, I believe.

As of today, the Maple Leafs draft 15th overall.
The Senators of Ottawa pick 3rd and 5th and 28th.
New Jersey has 3 1st Round picks too, 7th, 18th, 20th.

I include the Senators information here, as I'm not sure there are
enough fans on terb of the eastern Ontario club to carry its own thread.

I don't think that any opening date has been set and I'm pretty sure that there'd need to be discussions with the NHLPA, but I'm guessing that the new season will begin around Dec. 10.

Nothing set in stone, I had read mid December as well.
The commissioner indicated last week that puck drop may wait until sometime in the new year.

but there is a reason. Someone with hockey knowledge would not create a Leaf season thread and then delete it mid season.
Honestly kinda sounds like “old news” to me - I was not watching that thread then so don’t know who hurt who’s feelings etc.

However the path to “Leafs Enlightenment” is to look forward and hope the MLS brass just writes chqs and keeps their nose out of hockey operations - let “Hockey Minds” run the Franchise. If they would ever do that for a solid five years with the right staff - we are a contender.

I've brought up the fact that +/- is an archaic, insignificant, almost useless statistic, on occasion.

Today's evidence:

Player A
26 Years old
1st Round pick
427 NHL Gm 29G 95A 118 p.i.m.
+61

Player B
26 years old
1st Round pick
517 NHL Gm 54G 216A 127 p.i.m.
-40

Which player do you want on your team?

Agreed. I do think that Shanahan has had full autonomy in the hockey operation. Many had said this ownership would never allow tanking but Shanny did just that to get Matthews.

However, they did a lot more than just try to improve via the draft. Coaching, scouting, GMs, trades and free agents were all methods used to upgrade the team. Getting a top pick was part of a much larger plan. (Not that it has worked out optimally, to say the least.) And the tanking was only after the team had quit on Carlyle, he was fired (January? Feb?) and there was no hope to salvage that season.

That’s true too and they did a great job in tanking without looking like it. The hint was when Babcock first came he warned “there’ll be pain ahead” and promptly they went on to finish last.

Edit : Carlyle was fired the season before Babcock was hired. Babcock started the 2015-2016 season and they finished last.

Ironically, I really enjoyed watching them play.

Spezza re-signed for $700K.
I like Spezza, he doesn’t mind a physical game, and he did not demand 2 mill. Having said that, if you’re into golf season and fat contracts, Toronto is the place to play

How close do you think +/- is to WAR in Baseball? And would it be a significant part of a WAR measurement for Hockey?

Did you forget there's a salary cap? Spezza is practically getting min salary. How is that a fat contract?
Are you hard of "reading" or do you just assume everyone is always saying something negative as that is your default style? I don't think oral.com (great handle by the way) is saying Spezza's contract is fat - just that Toronto in the view of some has over paid certain players and they typically have an early start to their golf seasons.

So looking forward to your considered and temperate response.

+/- to W.A.R. ?
Like comparing apples to hippopotamuses.
I don't think it would be a significant factor, if at all.

Which player (A or B) would you want on your club?
