Back to hockey, I don't expect Marner to score over 80 goals like Brett Hull but the guy was paid $15mm last season and scored 16 goals.
Meaning what.

I didn't bother reading any of Dart's posts since it always has me reaching for Jean Luc Picard's head shake.
Did he say anything relevant?

You wisely avoided any strain on your neck that was sure to come.

It's difficult to compare players from different eras and different positions. Oates was a centre and they are expected to be playmakers. Wingers are expected and paid to score goals, unless they have other attributes.

Here are the goals and points in their first 4 years:
Marner 83 goals, Oates 68 goals
Marner 291 points, Oates 281 points

Let's play general manager and say you can pick 2 players from the following list for your team. In addition to goals and points, you must also consider leadership skills, character, toughness, defensive skills, etc. Who would be your two picks?
Oates
Bergeron
Gainey
Charbonneau
Ryan O'Reilly
Marner

Bergeon, Gainey

This is an easy question to answer....

O'Reilly (29)
Marner (23)

Love Bergeron but he's 35, likely retiring in 2 years.

The other guys are 58, 66, 60, I don't think any of them could keep up in today's NHL.

Based on the parameters given by darts which you adhered to, I'd say that it would be difficult to disagree with those choices

Marner had the highest point totals of all those players in the first four years. Marner has also played in an era where goals scored have been low (or goaltending & defense is much stronger). Offensively, he is way ahead of those players.

Trouble is, I am not too sure what the "book" was on those players after 4 years in the NHL. Did they display that leadership back then? Were their roles defined?

I would imagine that there has been a lot of players that had much more promising careers at the four year mark that simply fell off the table.

We really won't know how Marner would compare among his peers until his career is more than half over.

I think Dart is drowning.

My point is that I don't look only at goals and points in assessing the value of a player to his team. That is why I mentioned players like Gainey, Charbonneau, Bergeron and O'Reilly. Gainey and Chabonneau are in the HHOF becuase they bring other attributes besides just goals and points that make their team successful.

Does anybody see Marner bringing leadership, character, defensive skills and toughness to make the Leaf's a successful team?

I don't think that either Charbonneau or Chabonneau are in the HOF. Were you ever a Habs fan?

Stop this nonsense.
I agree. Enough of this bullshit. Let’s talk seriously. Did someone in this thread mention Hull & Oates?

Cuz if they did....”I can’t go for that. Nooooo can, no can do.”

A respected member (so you know its not one of the 3 BFFs) said Marner could be another Adam Oates.

Then one of the BFFs leaped in and said that Marner is no Brett Hull to justify Marner's 16 goal output.

Hey Phil. How's things?

darts is obsessed with me. But he never responds to any of my questions. He only gets brave and chimes in with a BFF (wow, what an insult) when he thinks he has someone who he can hide behind. I guess you were that guy today. LOL.
