I think there is a certain amount of mass hysteria going on here driven by the media, government bureaucrats and politicians.
To me, the case explaining the danger of corona virus has to be made mathematically in order to get some perspective; so, I'm going to do a little math to put things in clearer perspective.
America has a population of about 330 million people.
On average a person who is alive on January 1 of each year has about a 1.25 per cent chance of being dead by the time December 31 rolls around.
That means about 4.125 million people die each year in the USA out of a population of 330 million.
With 4.125 million people dying each year that mean about 11,300 Americans die each day of the week.
Since this is the 78 th day of 2020 that meas roughly 881 thousand Americans have died since January 1, 2020.
According to CNN today , there are 112 deaths in the USA this year caused by Corona virus. And virtually all of them are over the age of 50.
That means that out of all US deaths this year the percentage caused by corona virus is about 0.00013 per cent or much much less than 1 per cent.
Overall about one out of every 7,500 deaths in the USA this year is caused by Corona virus.
It seems odd to me that there is virtually no concern or worry about the effects that obesity, hypertension, and diabetes on US death rates this year. I bet these 3 factors are involved in deaths of half of US population who die this year. But, no concern by media, politicians and government bureaucrats, - all focus must be on the thing that is responsible this year for one out of every 7,500 US deaths this year.
I will change my mind if someone can make a mathematical case for why I should be completely losing my mind. There are a lot of things to be worried and concerned about in the world today; but, I'm not losing much sleep over Corona until someone makes a compelling mathematical argument about why I should be worried.
