I have talked about this subject with many people of Chinese origin both here in Toronto and in China. The quick answer to the question would be yes, it does appear that the Chinese are being blamed for this terrible virus that appears to be spreading throughout the world with sometimes tragic results, but mostly in the country where it started. Is this fair to those who are Chinese, especially in other parts of the world where there are so few cases of the virus (ie; Canada)? Personally, I don’t see it as fair especially when you see and hear some of the ridiculous comments made by some. But then again, just like my comment here is feuded by emotion, I can’t blame those who are scared of this potentially deadly virus, no matter how ignorant their comments and opinions are. This is probably where the “racism” term comes up. Maybe it is better to just write it off as being racist instead of calling someone stupid or ignorant.
In a city of millions, Toronto has only had a limited number of confirmed cases of coronavirus and no deaths. Whereas, each and every year hundreds of thousands get the flu and thousand die from complications of this “deadly” virus. Yet, this does not receive the negative attention the coronavirus virus is receiving. Maybe because it is new and has had deadly consequences in a country with over a billion people and wealth that has exploded more recently whereas the flu has been around forever and no matter what measures are taken, millions around the world still get it and hundreds of thousands die from it, young and old, men and women, EVERY YEAR!!! How much have these statistics changed how people act on a deadly basis. Do you stop using our overcrowded subways where there are thousands of sick people using it everyday. Does it stop you from going to large events like a hockey or basketball game or concert where thousands are in attendance with hundreds potentially having a deadly virus. Not really, it is almost like the flu virus has become an accepted deadly virus because it has been around for so long and at least some measures are being taken to safeguard those, especially the more vulnerable, from getting it. Regardless, millions still get it and hundreds of thousand still die from it.
Like racism, most opinions are based on emotion or personal experiences and not actual facts. My comments are no different. I am scared of potentially getting the flu or coronavirus because of my personal situation just like I am afraid to go into some areas of Toronto because of the fear of being robbed, attacked or killed. I will avoid situations or areas where there is a higher chance of getting sick or harmed. I am only human.
