Strange that the Canadian Military has not waded into this to provide comment, but not surprising. Only in Canada could this happen - the only democracy without a shred of national identity and precious little patriotism to go around. If Cherry was a US citizen, you can bet the narrative would be dramatically different.

At least the Hong Kong Chinese like the Brits. (I think the Taiwanese and Japanese also appreciate the U.S. 7th Fleet standing between them and the PRC.)

"Hong Kong protesters sang the British National Anthem in front of the British consulate, calling on the country step in and help them stand up to China. Hong Kong protesters waved union jacks and sang "God save the Queen" outside the British consulate on Sunday, defying an earlier protest ban.Sep 17, 2019" Source: Google
Yeah, if you're going to be colonized, it's best if it's white European males do the colonizing.

He already did the show, remember? They replaced MacClean with him in 2014 but by 2016 Rogers decided that it wasn't working and brought back MacClean.

I love George, but MacClean needs a larger than life counterpart opposite him, otherwise the entire thing doesn't work.

They should look to our pool of young Comedians. How about the lead from Letterkenny (Jared Keeso).. But maybe as his self-created character (Wayne).
George is a great guy but he's just another boring unoriginal host wrapped in Uber-cool attire (packaging). Clothing styles, nice demeanour, piercings, and love of "anti-establishment" music doesn't translate into the kind of speak-your-mind authenticity of a Don Cherry. But the latter is less predictable and therefore dangerous, even if the crime is a gaffe. Cherry has more balls and charisma than a dozen George's put together, and that's something that can't be faked day in and day out.

Bullshit. Don Cherry is saying what most Canadians are thinking. He gets fired for it.

New immigrants are certainly not paying hommage to earlier Canadians that sacrificed so much for our well-being.

I see Brown & Asian folks walk by and away the people selling poppies like they're a pest of some sort. A kind greeting never hurt anyone.
Let it all out. Don't hold back. Is that you, Donnie boy? Or is that you, Joe 'Worm'ington

Non-whites are a sacred cow. He should have known better than to say anything remotely negative about them since Canada's population has increasingly been replaced for decades.
So you're admitting that when he said "you people who come here," he wasn't talking about the (white?)Ukrainians, Poles, Greeks, Brits etc etc? Just those pesky coloured folk...right?

How long before you and your pals hold a 'Unite The White' rally shouting 'You (people) will not replace us'?

Keep going. Expose thyself. :encouragement:

Derrick, your hyperbole is unhelpful. We both know that this is not the time to break out our swastikas and hoods to march in the streets.

I think someone - Greekgod??? - among all these millions of Cherry threads, has already put forward the "Racial Replacement" hypothesis as the reason Cherry got canned. You're late to the (Nazi) party, Derrick.

It is too bad this episode of Cherry's firing has taken over and obscured all the good Don did. I will always remember how he honoured the sacrifice of members of the ******, RCMP police and others. There was always true emotion from Don. I am sure it was purely his own idea. CBC would never have thought it up and probably wished they could have stopped it. What about his pumping junior hockey at all levels, women's hockey, small town hockey, pure Canadian Nationalism, Remembrance Day, giving kids coaching tips, not only on how to play the game, but how to play it with class, how to be a teammate? There were so many things he did that were positive and even great. Even at the last he did not try to wiggle out of what he said. I agree he was wrong to say what he did and that what he said was inaccurate and wrong but at least he took his punishment. In the old days they would have said he took his punishment "like a man". Frankly I think the back face / brown face is a worse offence. The offender grovelled appropriately and apparently most Canadians forgave him. All the pontificating going on CBC and SportsNet today about Cherry somehow never appeared for black face / brown face.

I don't know why my last post was edited? I simply used the initials for the Canadian Armed Forces. ??????

An immigrant here. White, 16 years in Canada.

First of all, to be offended by Don Cherry's comment is like to be offended by Trump's tweets. Why take seriously some loud TV clowns whose job is to be loud in the first place?

Second point. It may come as a surprise to "seasoned" Canadians, but in reality unless one went to a Canadian school one has very chance to learn what is the Remembrance Day about. And, as we may see in this very thread, even Canadians themselves are not 100% sure what is remembered. Only the fallen? All soldiers? Who fought for freedom, democracy, the Queen? Yeah, I am sure someone can post a quote from wiki with a detailed explanation, but I just asked 3 colleagues around me (all white Canadians, not wearing poppy) - and didn't get a conclusive answer. So, how an immigrant can learn about something what Canadians themselves are not 100% sure about? What are Canadians seems to be sure is to wear poppy on November 11 as a sign of something related to veterans.

Which brings me to the third point.
One my grandfather served in Soviet Army 1930 - 1950, he went through entire WW2, survived.
Another grandfather survived German extermination camp in Poland.
I would not exist if they weren't' survivors.
I do remember them. I do pay respect to them. But never in my clear mind I would think about wearing a BADGE, to show to the World that I appreciate what they have done. Because remembrance and appreciation has nothing to do with showing off. You either feel it deep inside you, or don't. And I can't imagine wanting to show off your deep feelings or substitute them with a poppy on a pin.

I have great respect to Canadian soldiers, and in fact, all soldiers who fought to what they considered to be the right cause. But I will not wear a badge to "prove" that I have that respect as I consider it to be the part of the freedoms for which I appreciate Canada. Unlike most Canadians, I wore enough state-enforced badges on me in my life and I don't want any more. And I thank Canada for that.
This

I used to wear poppies all through out prep and high school while growing up on an island that had long gained it's independence from the British. My grandad, as well as one of my childhood heroes, who I was lucky to meet before he died, Dr. Arthur Wint (an Olympic champ, who trained in Canada for the war and flew for the RAF during the 40s - the same decade he won Olympic gold) served in WWII.

I don't feel the need to show anyone, least of all Don Cherry et al, how much I appreciate those who fought for 'freedoms'. Some fought for more than those 'freedoms'. They fought for their humanity. Something they weren't afforded before and after that fight for freedom.

Not so much late as just patiently waiting for certain dudes to expose themselves.

Don cherry speaks out.

Well it sounds like he wanted to say that he should have not said ''you people''. He wanted to smooth things over but they wouldn't let him.

Oh and good on him for not letting David Menzies bate him on Trudeau.

I am going to miss Coach's Corner. Hope Cherry makes it back somehow.

Canada's not what it used to be. We're trying to accommodate so many cultures and religions but fail to take care of our Canadian heritage and values.

New immigrants come to Canada and many just keep to their own. They celebrate the victories of their country or origin with passion but the same sentiments are not demonstrated within the country they presently reside in.

I have actually worked in an office with mostly immigrants as a student and was appalled at how they laughed at how, "Canadians have no culture." The office was 90% Asian and South Asian.

The Canadian who's forefathers worked tirelessly to make Canada and served in wars are called out when we speak our minds as racist. But when immigrants say and do hurtful things to us we are expected to laugh it off.

I fear what Canada will look like for my children's cohort 15 years from now. For we will be the minorities and the courtesy afforded by us to new immigrants may not be reciprocated!

Why don't we wait till these immigrants have kids and see what happens. I'm sure the kids will become Canadian.

I myself am Asian (born and raised in Toronto) and I'm probably just as Canadian as you. I can't even speak my native language which I regret now.

Funny thing is, a lot of immigrant parents are worried that their culture will be lost coming to Canada (or USA)...like my parents.
