It wasn't about freedom of a country but freedom for our way of life, Democracy, The troops also fought for the freedom of the Jews.
Actually they didn't. The West had a record of refusing asylum to Jews before 1939 and deporting them back to Nazi Germany. And Jews were never part of the Allies war aims. Indeed, the Allied troops were SHOCKED to find the Nazi extermination camps when they occupied Germany in 1945.

Bullshit. Don Cherry is saying what most Canadians are thinking. He gets fired for it.

New immigrants are certainly not paying hommage to earlier Canadians that sacrificed so much for our well-being.

I see Brown & Asian folks walk by and away the people selling poppies like they're a pest of some sort. A kind greeting never hurt anyone.

I don't think the Allies knew about the concentration camps until they were liberated. Or they knew but never mentioned it.

We didn't know about the concentration camps, but as early as the summer of 1941, the Allies were listening in on German radio transmissions that described systematic mass murders in Lithuania and Latvia.

By spring of 1942, news started to arrive about how Jews specifically were being hunted down and murdered. By the summer of 1942 we had a pretty good idea of what was going on (headlines like "1,000,000 Jews Dead since War Began" started appearing in British newspapers).

SEE!??!

"Brown & Asian folks" literally the very people that we were refusing to "liberate" (India from Britain, Indochina from the French, China from dictatorial rule under the KMT OR Communists, etc.,.).

And this guy thinks that these "Brown & Asian folks" should have to pay homage to soldiers who unwittingly participated in their continued subjugation, based on his personal delusion (or ignorance of well documented facts) that it was "Freedom" that was being fought for.

At least the Hong Kong Chinese like the Brits. (I think the Taiwanese and Japanese also appreciate the U.S. 7th Fleet standing between them and the PRC.)

"Hong Kong protesters sang the British National Anthem in front of the British consulate, calling on the country step in and help them stand up to China. Hong Kong protesters waved union jacks and sang "God save the Queen" outside the British consulate on Sunday, defying an earlier protest ban.Sep 17, 2019" Source: Google

I didn't expect Cherry to apologize, it would have be beneath him to do it.
We needed a change with HNIC, get a bunch of mid 40s guys to do the show.
Yeah, what about someone like George Stroumboulopoulos?

Well I actually went to a Remembrance Day ceremony where there were Brown and Asian Air, Army and Sea Cadets in the hundreds. The army cadet unit alone had over 100 cadets show up.

You know how else showed up and wore poppies? Old Sikh men who served in the Indian armed forces.

Where I work, they had donation boxes on every floor, and just as many "White" people did not wear a poppy as the new citizens, which in my opinion is worse because they've been living in Canada their entire lives and have went to dozens of school ceremonies. Those people should know exactly what Remembrance Day means, and they still choose not to wear one.

1)He wasn't a coach. (maybe GM's Garage)
2)His style is too similar to Cherry--a bit too loud
3)His sense of fashion (tie draped around his neck) is as dumb as Cherry's
4)He's American

Actually, I don't really care.

There's a great episode in Band of Brothers that deals with this.

Non-whites are a sacred cow. He should have known better than to say anything remotely negative about them since Canada's population has increasingly been replaced for decades.

Yeah, what about someone like George Stroumboulopoulos?
He already did the show, remember? They replaced MacClean with him in 2014 but by 2016 Rogers decided that it wasn't working and brought back MacClean.

I love George, but MacClean needs a larger than life counterpart opposite him, otherwise the entire thing doesn't work.

They should look to our pool of young Comedians. How about the lead from Letterkenny (Jared Keeso).. But maybe as his self-created character (Wayne).

LMAO what???

The Japanese hate the westerners at a fanatical level
We sided with the Chinese to fight the Japanese as far back as the 1890s

Even more hilarious is the Taiwan (Formosa) comment
After our Chinese allies were defeated by the Japanese and overthrown in mainland China, they proceeded to flee the country
They went to Formosa (Taiwan), KILLED over 80% of the population, and resettled it as a new country Taiwan

So um yeah I HIGHLY doubt many of the survivors are pro-west

Either way Hong Kong will lose its special status and become just China
All these protestors hoping to delay / change that fact seem to have forgotten the 50 year limit

Mclean is the straight man, his counterpart must be someone who is funny and colourful: I say bring in Tiger Williams!

"Done like Dinner", "Metaphor?, what's that? a rock?"

MacClean is too self effacing to carry the segment. He's the perfect "straight man" for the comic lead.

They need someone with a big in your face personality and enough hockey cred and savvy to provide the "insights".

An immigrant here. White, 16 years in Canada.

First of all, to be offended by Don Cherry's comment is like to be offended by Trump's tweets. Why take seriously some loud TV clowns whose job is to be loud in the first place?

Second point. It may come as a surprise to "seasoned" Canadians, but in reality unless one went to a Canadian school one has very chance to learn what is the Remembrance Day about. And, as we may see in this very thread, even Canadians themselves are not 100% sure what is remembered. Only the fallen? All soldiers? Who fought for freedom, democracy, the Queen? Yeah, I am sure someone can post a quote from wiki with a detailed explanation, but I just asked 3 colleagues around me (all white Canadians, not wearing poppy) - and didn't get a conclusive answer. So, how an immigrant can learn about something what Canadians themselves are not 100% sure about? What are Canadians seems to be sure is to wear poppy on November 11 as a sign of something related to veterans.

Which brings me to the third point.
One my grandfather served in Soviet Army 1930 - 1950, he went through entire WW2, survived.
Another grandfather survived German extermination camp in Poland.
I would not exist if they weren't' survivors.
I do remember them. I do pay respect to them. But never in my clear mind I would think about wearing a BADGE, to show to the World that I appreciate what they have done. Because remembrance and appreciation has nothing to do with showing off. You either feel it deep inside you, or don't. And I can't imagine wanting to show off your deep feelings or substitute them with a poppy on a pin.

I have great respect to Canadian soldiers, and in fact, all soldiers who fought to what they considered to be the right cause. But I will not wear a badge to "prove" that I have that respect as I consider it to be the part of the freedoms for which I appreciate Canada. Unlike most Canadians, I wore enough state-enforced badges on me in my life and I don't want any more. And I thank Canada for that.
