I think you need to do a tad more research on patriotism versus, say, other concepts such as nationalism.
Every Nationalist is a Patriot, but not every Patriot is a Nationalist yada yada yada.. Yes yes I've heard this before. I'm not confused. I'm talking about how the love of one's country becomes a tool that leads to nationalistic ideas.

Patriotism is only dangerous ... when it can be used to turn groups of people against each other
Thank you for making my point for me? You are correct that Patriotism, when espoused as a virtue by and for the idiot masses, becomes a tool that can be used to turn people against one another.

I think what you're really talking about is communism
... Yeah, so just like how Propaganda and Patriotism have nothing to do with one another, Communism and Patriotism have nothing to do with one another. Communism is a social, political, and economic ideology. Patriotism, again, is how one feels about their homeland.

One can appeal to another's patriotic sensibilities in a piece of propaganda, but that doesn't mean that propaganda IS patriotism.

One can be patriotic about their communist country, but that doesn't mean that communism IS patriotism.

So what happens now that CTV big mouth Jess Allen has essentially doubled down on the same type of offensive discourse as Cherry but has specifically called out whites? Shouldn't she get the toss as well? #firejessallen
So she completely generalized all “White boys “ and not a single word of negativity towards her from any media outlet period ?
She has every right in this democracy to disagree with Don Cherry but why attach kids ?
She than goes on to insult Cherry’s intelligence, again she can have her opinions but why is there no recourse for Jess Allen

Yeah.. The guy had a job as a spokesperson for Quizno's and couldn't pronounce "Tzatziki". It wasn't hard to insult his intelligence. Hell, even his rant about the Poppy was barely intelligible.

I do find the outrage more than a little precious, as we're talking about her insulting wealthy white dudes who play hockey (as if they've ever really been a systemically marginalized group before).. But it's true that, at its core, it's no different than what Cherry said and we should hold her to the same standard.

Cherry effectively said "maybe not all immigrants fail to wear a Poppy and show respect, but a lot of them do"
Allen effectively said "maybe not all wealthy white dudes who play Hockey are bullies who love Don Cherry, but a lot of them are"

Unless somebody disagrees and can shed some better light on things, then it seems to me that it's the same.

Context is everything, pal. Now you're just off on some random pseudo-intellectual tangent rant...so very 'TERB'. LOL!

Patriotism is dangerous if blindly held. Just like a lit candle is dangerous if blindly held.

Lay off the academic deconstruction of everything of importance.

Patriotism is dangerous.. Especially when it's practiced by the uneducated masses.

Most people seem to view Patriotism the same way they view their religion in that they feel it's a sin to question it.

I find I was less Patriotic when we were being governed by Stephen Harper and he decided we should abandon the Kyoto Protocol. I felt very Patriotic under Chretien (probably most Patriotic when he told the US that we wouldn't be joining their War in Iraq). But most idiots don't have varying degrees of Patriotism. They just say dumb ass shit like "BEST COUNTRY EVER" or "LAND OF THE FREE" or whatever nonsensical drivel they're regurgitating. Patriotism is a great way to keep the proletariat on your side while you take away their rights and freedoms.
Patriotism isn't dangerous or harmless. It depends on what your intentions are. You can use it to bring people together or divide them. It is sad that so many are using it as a way to divide people these days. Patriotism can be perverted as the Americans do when they use it to sell stuff or use it to harshly criticizing people for voicing opposing views. That being said, the American form of patriotism is still largely a positive force. You can also take patriotism to the extreme like in North Korea where you can be put to death for saying the wrong thing.

I agree with you that statements like "greatest country in the world" are idiotic. The US is the prime example that still has seemingly unsolvable social problems. Why is there huge wealth disparity in that country? Why are major companies seemingly allowed to commit large scale fraud without punishment. The list can go on and on.

You said that he was trying to equate patriotism to propaganda, which are unrelated. The exact opposite of patriotism would be treason.

You and Smollett probably have more than I do. We should get together and role play.
The only hood (in West Indian vernacular) I have is the one I offer to ladies, so no, we will never get together and do any sort of playing.

Since you're so obsessed with Juicy...ermm, I mean Jussie, you can always go play with him, since he swings that way. And since you're small, you can be the bottom.

Enjoy.

Everyone I talk to agree with him, they just wish he said it a different way. The idea is to respect Canada and our veterans.

GTA & Thereabouts...
So they had to get rid of him because was harming the brand.
Agreed. But their brand is taking a hit now as well. Rogers/SportsNet probably could've handled the situation better themselves. For example: Having Don clarify his points (correctly this time) and having him run a segment on the contributions from immigrants serving in the Canadian Forces.

Not for people with racist/misogynistic views speaking to a national audience.
Liberal supporters certainly had a lot of tolerance for Trudeau and his stupidity.

We're becoming ridiculous.
