If your going to play for the Leafs (which I think plenty on this board think they can) you cannot wear numbers: 1, 4, 5, 6, 7, 9, 10, 13, 14, 17, 21, 27, 93 and 99 (NHL retired Gretzky's number).

I think it is a travesty that 23 was not in that group.

It's exciting to finally see some good things going for the Leafs and nice touch of syrup to a bitter bowl of soup ...

Thanks to the Youthful Leafs add a bit of sweetness to the weekend's sports joy.

Anyone know why Mats Sundin wasn't at the ceremony last night? After all, it's considered a pretty big deal when a team retires your number.

Enjoyed watching them so far. I was all set for a run at the Nolan Patrick sweepstakes but I kinda like seeing them compete.

Todd Gill - The 84th best Leaf of all time. That is as sad as when they had the ceremony to open the ACC (or was it close MLG) and John Mcintyre and Fred Boimstruck came out.

Although that list seems to be favourably skewed IMO to Leafs of the 80s -- overrating some of them.

Gary Leeman had 2 good years in a high scoring era. He should not be close to Kessel. Bill Derlago seems high as well.

That list is hysterical. In what universe would Bill Derlago and Al Iafrate rate higher than Pat Boutette?

Yeah I'm dating myself but those two sucked ass and were part of the problem in the 80's. Boutette had major battles against the Flyers in the playoffs anf played a major role in the Leafs eliminating the Islanders.

Boutette - Stan Weir and Tiger Williams remain the best checking line the Leafs ever had. In the 78 semifinals they outscored Trottier - Bossy and Nystrom.

The Leafs are now so rich in offensive prospects that they may stand to lose someone like a Leivo because he has to clear waiver before being sent down to the Marlies. The defence (and goaltending) talent pool remains very shallow.

Lou may soon have to trade some young forwards for defencemen to spread the youth wealth a bit.

Other than the top 10 or 20, you guys shouldn't take it so seriously top 100 is a pretty long list for a franchise who has not had success for about 50 years. So guys like Todd Gill make the list. A joke I know but...

I don't have a problem with Gill, I have a problem with heart and soul players like Pat Boutette getting left off they list.

I still think the Leafs will get another lottery pick after this season. However they should sign an impact free agent - if Taylor Hall opts out of his contract.

NHL player contracts do not have "opt-out" clauses.
Taylor Hall is signed through the 2019-20 season.

It's going to be a long winter for Leafs fan after watching the type of game they played in the Peg last night.:blue:
Try to look at the big picture and you should see more positives than negatives. 4 points after 3 games is not too shabby.

i actually found the game last night was entertaining watch, seeing the young leafs flashing there offensive skills. Are they going win alot of games this year ? No, I don't expect them to as they are still in the rebuilding process. Quite frankly I want them to tank this year and get another lottery pick. I've seen this happen to this organization all to often, once they see a little success they expedite the rebuilding process by trading there young assets for over the hill veterans only to squeeze into the play-offs and get knocked out in the first round.

They are going to lose alot of games this year, which I don't have problem with. As long as there young players are going to continue to develop given ice time and learn under Babcock, build through the draft. They will be a sustainable championship caliber team in the near future. Enjoy the run'n gun team in the mean while, sure is exciting to watch.

Have you seen Shanahan do or say anything to indicate he would take this approach?

If Shanahan went truculent, Uncle Lou would quit.

However Rogers may feel the need to meddle. They've taken a bath on their hockey contract and the ratings for the WC are not would they could have been. I sincerely hope that isn't the case, it's happened too many times in the past. Here's one of the worst examples: Pat Quinn wanted to sign Adam Foote in 2002-03. But The Board nixed the deal because he was too expensive. So they traded away prospects to the San Jose Sharks for Owen Nolan.

I don't blame Quinn, like Cliff Fletcher before him, he made that deal under duress. I'm praying that Rogers will stay the course - I'm getting too old to be a Leafs fan.

I suspect that Shanny has a pretty free hand. He must already be near the cap so regardless of what he does it will not really affect MLSE's bottom line.
