City Hall Racist Ad

First off, I don't think it correct that the city should be spending 80 grand on an idiotic poster like that. Secondly I don't think it correct that the city of Toronto should be in the morality business at all. The city should be responsible for maintaining municipal infrastructure period. There was an article just yesterday in the Toronto Star about how the city's expenses are rapidly increasing under Tory in excess of revenue. We are in for a big budget crunch. And some idiot approved 80 grand on stupidity like this?

They need to be fired.

If this ad creates this much discussion here and creates similar discussions elsewhere in the city, then its going to be a very effective and useful campaign.

For lack of a better term, I'll call it "intra-racism". In some societies, people of the same race discriminate against other people of the same race. I can't mention these societies because political correctness. Yes Virginia, some people face more "racism" from people of their own race than from other races.

Not a big deal but the last time I was in Montreal I was told "English go home" in English not in French. Maybe Montreal should put up this type of anti-racism poster on their subway trains.

Statistically speaking, it is far more likely that racism in Canada will be committed by a white person because there are far more white people in Canada than anything else.

Um, because racist Asian store clerks make up essentially 0% of the population? Similarly there are far more Christians who speak against homosexuality than there are Muslims in Canada. And you might not get this but a black person will not read the poster then decide it doesn't apply to him because it's a white guy.

The point is a valid one. Our society is inherently intolerant of new groups of immigrants. It just happens right now that the most recent noticeable wave are Muslims.

If only economic ignorance were an Olympic event. The money used for this comes from health care, education, etc, etc.

By your logic it would be better if they spent 10 times or 100 times as much? As long as we get lots of discussion. Why not spend 8 billion on posters instead of $80,000.

The truth of the matter is that there is no clear Quranic verse which prescribes punishment for homosexuality or bisexuality. It is only in the Hadith or Sayings of the Prophet and the Sunnah, that the worst verses against homosexuals, Jews, women, etc. are found.

The Quran, Hadith and the deeds and sayings in the life of Muhammad – known as Sunnah – are considered a model for the life-style that all Muslims are obliged to follow.

The Quran, Hadith and the Sunnah are together are the totality of the Islamic supremacist ideology.

You will never clearly understand Islam without looking at the Hadith and Sunnah.

Ah, the straw man argument.

Public education on issues is a worthwhile use of a small amount of tax resources. $80,000 in the city's budget isn't that massive.
I don't know what the correct amount to spend would be or what other issues we should be talking about, but if they spent $80k and got this much response and discussion around the city then most people would probably say it was worth it.

If you disagree, vote for someone else next time.
