Like the case in Hamilton a few weeks ago where a home owner shot and killed a guy who was trying to steal his truck at 3 in the morning . Didn't take him long to get bail which seems kind of strange .

Then you had the case in Welland I think where a bunch of guys were fire bombing some ones home in the country . The home owner took a warning shot and the criminals took off. The cops charged the home owner because he hadn't put his gun away safely even though he just used it . WTF .

People trying to kill and burn down your home and the home owner gets charged . Makes you really wonder WTF . Yea I'll just watch these guys burn my house down while I wait for the cops to show up .

The home owner got off but with some hefty legal fees . F*cking ridiculous .
The total legal cost to Thompson was $60,000. He did get a lot of donations though. Most people would have accepted a plea bargain by pleading guilty and accepting a lifetime firearms ban in order to avoid prison should they lose their case. Otherwise, the Crown can bankrupt you through prosecution using flimsy evidence and liberal interpretation of the law, using unlimited public tax money. He could only get compensated by laying a malicious prosecution charge, which is virtually impossible to prove, plus it would cost another $25,000 in legal fees. At least there was a precedent established that there is no such thing as improper storage of ammunition. It is only improper if the ammunition is stored along with the firearms, except if they are both together in a safe.

A point of clarification, cops don't have ATCs, they're not even required to do the firearms safety course. Through provisions in the Criminal Code and Police Services Act, they carry firearms as a condition of their employment.

An armoured car guard does require an ATC, though; they're treated as citizens, albeit employed in a profession which can legally justify the carrying of a restricted firearm, with no explicit exemptions under Canadian law.
To further illustrate my point:

20 days docked pay for smuggling a prohibited firearm and device. Clearly, those who enforce the law are above it.
